Eastern PA College Prospect Showcase Analysis: Class of 2017

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Of the 38 prospects that participated in the Eastern PA College Prospect Showcase, just two have yet to play a high school baseball game. Following is a look at the members of the Class of 2017 in attendance.

Peter VaccaroSS/RHP Peter Vaccaro (Oley Valley HS)

Vaccaro showcased well in all facets of the game. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound freshman has an athletic frame and moved well defensively. Vaccaro showcased a soft glove hand and displayed the ability to make all plays from his middle infield position. His 74 mph arm across the diamond will improve as he adds to his frame. Vaccaro ran a solid 7.34 60-yard dash on a slow track and turned in an impressive round of batting practice. The left-handed hitter utilized a square stance, a flat bat path and good balance throughout his swing to routinely make hard contact. Vaccaro did not work out as a pitcher at this event.

Matt LanzoneLHP Matt Lanzone (Emmaus HS)

Lanzone is a 6-foot, 175-pound lefty that appears to be far from physical maturity. He showcased sound mechanics with a high leg kick and natural cut to his 62 mph fastball. Lanzone also commanded a 58 mph changeup with some cutting action and a 55-56 mph cutter. The freshman does not yet throw a curveball, instead demonstrating a 53 mph knuckle ball that he struggled to command. Lanzone has the athleticism and the size to add significant velocity in a hurry. He will need to eliminate at least one of his off speed pitches as he moves forward and will need to get stronger to continue progressing as a prospect.
