Class of 2022 Inside the Rankings: Up Next
January 4, 2022
Each week leading up to the new year, we'll be rolling out Inside the Rankings articles to further highlight the movement around the ‘22 classes in PA and NY. This week’s focus shifts the scope to “Up Next,” the top uncommitted catching prospect in the state.
2022 C JOEY CASCIATO (PENN-TRAFFORD)
The Spin: Though slightly undersized at 5-foot-9, 165lbs, Casciato has bridged the gap by being extremely efficient in the crouch, producing compact strength and athleticism from multiple stances (left-knee down, traditional). Defense has always been the calling-card for the Penn-Trafford native, comparing admirably to some of the best in the state in the catch-and-throw phase. In his four-event PBR career, Casciato has hovered sub-2.00 to 2.00 at each stop with his “slowest” being a 2.01-2.03 at his first ever event in 2020. We can expect that the arm strength continues improving (74 mph best) setting himself up for yet another leap on that side of the ball. A smart, well-rounded player with continued off-the-field success in the classroom (3.90 GPA), he impressively scored in the top three for VISUAL EDGE at the PA State Games (84.6). This ability to quickly process information coupled with good hand-eye skills have transferred over to repeated offensive success (58% sweet spot, 50% line-drive rate). An already confident option to lead a collegiate pitching staff, Casciato is just one more offensive/strength jump away from being a force.
The Performance: 2/07/21, Preseason All-State Southwest | Recorded the second best pop-time at the event (1.98 seconds) while notching personal bests in exit velocity (92 mph), distance (329 feet), line-drive rate (50%), and rotational acceleration (20.6 G’s). Took a controlled round of batting practice with gap-to-gap juice, earning a trip to the PA State Games in the following months.
