Blast Breakdown: 2022 OF Tyler Mack (Seneca Valley)

Joe Walentin
Operations / Scouting

Welcome to Blast Breakdown! In this series we will spotlight one player each week who stood out during this 2020 season and take a deeper dive into their numbers and take a look at some that really stand out.
Before we get started, we'll go over and define some of the terminology being used in the piece:

Bat Speed- The total speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact, measured in mph. The sweet spot is measured 6 inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration- A measure of how quickly the hitter gets the bat from launch position into the swing plane. This is measured in G-Force (g).

On Plane Efficiency- Measures the percentage of your swing that stays on-plane with the incoming pitch.

Attack Angle- The angle that the barrel approaches the ball at impact.

Exit Velocity-  The measures the speed of the ball off the bat, measured in miles per hour (mph).

Scouting Report

There is a lot to like in Mack's swing. He showed some big time power in a impressive round of live arm BP at this year State Games back in June and has some advanced Blast metrics to back it up
Starting with the bat speed Mack displayed his raw power with a average bat speed of 76 mph and peaked at 82.5 MPH putting him above the MLB average of 71.4 MPH according to Blast data.
What was just as impressive is his rotational acceleration which shows his power efficiency. Mack's average rotational acceleration came in at 21.3 G's with a peak of 25 G's, again putting him above the MLB average of 17.2 G's. These two metrics give Mack what Blast refers to as Dynamic Power,  a strong POWER swing profile that can generally hit for power without sacrificing contact.
The last thing we will look at is Mack's contact profile which is made up of his On-Plane Efficiency and Attack Angle and shows if he is equipped to make consistent, hard contact. Mack's On-Plane efficiency (percentage of swing that stays on plane with incoming pitch) registered at an advanced 80% coming in above the target mark of 70+. The attack angle target range is 5-15. Mack had a average of 12 which correlated with his results of 38% line drives and 25% fly balls.  With Mack's raw power, power efficiency and ability to get on plane early and stay on plane, he is well equipped to hit the ball hard, consistently at the next level.
