Best Tools: Uncommitted 2016 Infielders

With the fall season coming to a close and the NCAA Signing Period just over two weeks away, we are highlighting the top uncommitted prospects in the senior class this week.  We continue today with infielders.

Best Hitting Prospect: Laurel Highlands 3B Dominic Peroni

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitter exhibited a simple, balanced approach and ability to repeat his swing, coupled with bat speed that generated a 93-mph exit velocity, at the 2015 Preseason All-State Showcase. He posted a .352 average, 12 extra-base hits, and .486 on-base percentage as a junior. In addition to being the top hitting infielder still available, Peroni is also the top all-around infielder, having shown good feet, a soft glove hand, an 86-mph accurate arm across the diamond, and running well for a corner guy (7.14 60-yard dash).

 

Best Power Prospect: Neumann-Goretti 1B Lou Testa

Standing at a hulking 6-foot-2, 230-pounds with a 97-mph exit velocity, Testa has the raw power to leave any yard. Nearly one year ago at the 2014 Elite Prospect Showcase, the right-handed hitter generated his juice via a strong lower half with very good hip torque and bat speed. He has some swing-and-miss to his game that currently doesn't allow him to consistently tap into his full power potential, but his size and bat speed are a rare combination at the high school level.

 

Best Defensive Prospect: McDowell SS Matt Silay

At the 2015 Preseason All-State Showcase, Silay exhibited athletic actions and feet, good hands, and an accurate 80-mph arm that plays up due to getting his feet and shoulders square and doing a good job following his throw. The right-handed hitter acquits himself well with the bat too, posting a .358 average with a .442 on-base percentage (9 walks vs 7 strikeouts) and 14 stolen bases as a junior. Silay exhibits good pre-swing rhythm and flashes bat speed with the potential to drive the ball to the pullside gap (88-mph exit velocity).

 

Best Footspeed: Montour 2B Brady Minetti

Minetti ran a 6.77 60-yard dash while nursing a minor hamstring injury at the 2015 West Virginia Top Prospect Games. He exhibits good feet and plays with a bounce defensively, while showing an ability to complete slow roller plays on the move. The 5-foot-10, 155-pound left-handed hitter has a contact-oriented approach at the plate (only two strikeouts in 40 plate appearance as a junior).
