Altoona Captures Third Straight Curve Classic Title
April 18, 2012
Altoona High School won the Curve Clasic for the third straight year and the sixth time in 10 years on Saturday. The Mountain Lions finished off their championship run with a 7-3 victory over Hollidaysburg at Peoples Natural Gas Field, home of the Altoona Curve. Ben Wyland (2013) went the distance on the mound giving up just three singles while striking out eight and walking none.
This year's tournament was littered with quality performances and players currently ranked by Prep Baseball Report. No performance was more eye popping than that of Hollidaysburg pitcher Dominic Viduya (2013). The left hander tossed a perfect game in the semi-finals against Bishop Gulifoyle to propel Hollidaysburg into the finals. Viduya used just 57 total pitches, 43 of which were strikes, to dispose of the Maruaders in five innings, 10-0. Bishop Guilfoyle's Jextin Pugh (2013), the No. 1 ranked player in the Class of 2013, had the best chance to end the perfect game in the fourth inning. Pugh had an eight pitch at bat, but ended up popping out to third and Viduya cruised from there.
On Friday, Bishop Guilfoyle starter Matt Stewart (2014) went the distance, walking just one and striking out seven in an 8-2 Marauder victory over Northern Cambria.
The championship game included two of Prep Baseball Report's top players. Altoona shortstop Christian Helsel, No. 10 ranked in the Class of 2012, had a hit in two official at bats and scored two runs. In a losing effort, Brett Hileman No. 2 ranked in the Class of 2013, was 1-for-3 for Hollidaysburg.
