2018 Preseason All-State Showcase Analysis: Class of 2021 Position Players

94 prospects showcased their abilities over the two days of the 2018 Preseason All-State Showcase. 
Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at position players in the Class of 2021.

Top Prospects

Jack NugentJack Nugent, 2021, C, Central Bucks East
5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Showcased good balance and rhythm to swing with aggressive lower half leading to consistent loud contact. Present power to the pull side with a bat exit velocity of 87 mph. Registered pop times of 2.22-2.28 on throws of 67 mph from the crouch. Sound receiver with quick feet and clean transition. Tendency to float to third base line is correctable. Displayed athleticism in running a 7.19 60-yard dash. Definitely a catcher to watch in this class.

Zach SmithZach Smith, 2021, SS, Perkiomen School
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitter impressed with a fundamentally sound, repeatable swing with an advanced feel for the barrel. He starts from a square stance and utilizes a quiet heel-raise stride to initiate his swing. Displays little wasted movement with a short, direct swing path leading to present gap power and a bat exit velocity of 87 mph. Ran a 7.23 60-yard dash and showcased developing actions as a middle infielder. Flashed active feet and a quick release with 77 mph arm strength across the diamond. Likely a second baseman at the next level, but could handle duties at third base as he continues to fill out and add strength to his solid frame.

Brian Finn, 2021, SS, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy
5-foot-7, 135-pound right-handed hitter starts from a wide, slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a short leg-hang stride. Drives lower half with a hard bag leg push and an aggressive hip turn. Significant lower half glide leads to head moving resulting in missing a number of barrels on this date. Ran a 7.45 60-yard dash and showcased the ability to make throws from multiple arm slots defensively with a quick release. Showed good body control on the slow roller play and 74 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Colin Fitzgerald, 2021, C, Manheim Township
5-foot-11, 165-pound backstop is still working back from an injury. Solid receiver displayed a soft glove hand and presents a soft wall when blocking. Showcased good footwork and a quick transition on pop times of 2.15-2.22 on throws of 68 mph from the crouch. Right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a line drive approach with a solid feel for the barrel and a bat exit velocity of 73 mph. Fundamentally sound prospect should make significant strides as he adds strength to his current frame.

Eric Genther, 2021, C, The Haverford School
6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed a flat barrel path through the hitting zone and a solid feel for the barrel with a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. Ran a 7.44 60-yard dash and showcased pop times of 2.20-2.28 on throws of 70 mph from the crouch. Showcased quick feet and a clean transition but does not fully incorporate lower half in throwing motion.

Jack Giovenco, 2021, C, Parkland
5-foot-11, 155-pound backstop showcased pop times of 2.24-2.31 on throws of 66 mph from the crouch. Stays directional with a short arm swing, but footwork will need to be cleaned up. Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed a solid fee for the barrel with a line drive approach resulting in a bat exit velocity of 73 mph. Showcased good feet running a 7.19 60-yard dash. Overall game will benefit from strength gains through physical maturity.

Dylan King, 2021, 3B, Manheim Township
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitter starts from an open stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to get back to square. Showcased a line drive approach with an ability to use all fields while registering a bat exit velocity of 74 mph. Ran an 8.15 60-yard dash and displayed present 73 mph arm strength across the diamond from third base. Overall skill set will benefit from additional strength gains through physical maturity.

Matthew Martinez, 2021, C, Bethlehem Catholic
5-foot-10, 165-pound backstop showcased pop times of 2.21-2.27 on throws of 68 mph from the crouch. Displayed a short arm stroke and quick release. Currently fails to fully incorporate back side in throwing motion. Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Showed a feel for the barrel with a line drive approach and a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. Ran a 7.56 60-yard dash.

Colby Seelig, 2021, OF, North Penn
5-foot-11, 202-pound right-handed hitter starts from a narrow, slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a leg-lift stride. Strong lower half, but limited rotation results in a line drive approach at the plate with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. Ran a 7.53 60-yard dash and showcased 75 mph arm strength from the outfield with developing defensive abilities.
