Oregon Class of 2027 Player Rankings Update (June 2024)
June 16, 2024
As the Oregon high school baseball season has reached its conclusion, we also reach the conclusion of our high school player rankings spring updates. This spring, Prep Baseball Staff saw hundreds of players, and saw several standout performers throughout. Today, in our final week of the three-week player rankings updates, we reveal our 2027 player rankings.
As always, Prep Baseball's evaluation process is a fluid and ongoing process with multiple viewings in order to get the best feel for players abilities. It is important to note that as players continue their development, some show marked improvement at a much more rapid pace. That doesn’t indicate that other players have necessarily gotten worse or went backwards. As the year unfolds, players make improvements and new prospects constantly arise, naturally expanding Prep Baseball's ranking lists. In addition to the evaluations of players, our scouts, both those in Oregon and nationally, have had multiple discussions with each other to review our individual lists and create the most informed and comprehensive rankings list possible.
Featuring a total of 25 prospects, the class of 2027 list showcases several standout high school performers, other mainstays in top prospect lists, and an increasingly deep pool of two-way talent. Below is our top 10 list and other notes on some of the top players from the 2027 class.
The Top 10 remains mostly unchanged with the exception of a few small moves.
2027 INF/RHP Manny Ehinger (Lakeridge/Oregon) remains at the #1 spot after a strong freshman year at the 6A level. Overall the frame is still highly projectable with a chance to carry even more strength & power as he develops. Defensively he has fluid actions on the dirt and cna play low easily for a taller INF prospect.
2027 C Joe Mendazona Jr (Central) climbs to the #2 spot after a highly productive varsity campaign in which he slashed an absurd .518/.615/.890 which included 17 2Bs, 6 3Bs and a HR. The left-handed bat path gives him great plate coverage with ability to drive the ball to all fields and create easy lift.
2027 INF/RHP JT Girod (Central) was exceptional across multiple looks in the pre-season. Offensively it’s a polished look with balanced actions and a loose, easy barrel. Functional athlete on the dirt with a fluid exchange & quick hands. Arm gets easy carry across the diamond and it translates well to the mound.
CHRISTIAN ON THE RISE
2027 RHP Mason Christian (Willamette) climbs to the #7 spot after racking up 49.2 IP with a 1.69 ERA. At 6’2, 185 lbs, it’s a highly projectable frame with a starter type build. Features a long, loose arm path with quickness out front at release and an athletic decel down the slope. Overall has a very consistent feel for his arsenal with the athletic traits capable of making a jump quickly.
NEWCOMERS
#15 2027 RHP Harrison Buckingham (South Salem)
Buckingham has always shown a smooth, easy operation on the bump with a lively FB and quality secondaries. Flashed a nice velo jump in a late spring outing during state playoffs with the FB running 82-85 & breaking ball at 74-75 and CH 78-79. Given the size and arm action, more velocity is likely on the way and he could see a sizable jump in innings next year.
#16 2027 RHP/OF Shane Haddad Jr (Tualatin)
Wiry strong with an athletic trim at 5’11, 180 lbs, Haddad pitches with a short, tight arm action that creates some late deception as ball jumps from a low ¾ release. Also spins a firm SL with tight shape and has the makings of a quality split for his 3rd offering. Quality blend of current athleticism/body control with emerging stuff.
#20 2027 C Gavin Thaut (West Linn)
Strong, physical bat in the class with a considerable offensive ceiling. Thaut was exceptional in a preseason look this winter as he showcased a heavy, left-handed barrel with aggressive bat speed and a balanced stroke. Physically he’s a good fit at the C position and carries a highly sought after profile with his skill set.
#24 2027 OF Jonah Lam (Clackamas)
Lam is an exciting athlete who can really fly on the bases and in the OF. Using quick, effortless strides he gets to top end speed easily and maintains his speed underway. Offensively he’s always shown a simplified, contact approach but the added strength is allowing him to impact the ball with more authority and get consistent lift.
