Quick Hits - Portland Summer Open

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

On Thursday, June 15th we were over at the immaculate confines of Joe Etzel Field at the University of Portland for our first open event of the Summer.

For most in the baseball world the summer schedule is as hectic as it gets. From scouts to coaches to players, everyone is traveling the country looking for the best experiences possible and many are trying to navigate the landscape to put themselves in the best possible situation to #BeSeen.

Our Summer Tour of open showcases takes the approach of making it easier for the player to find a local event, open to all grad classes and skill levels, and providing the opportunity to get in front of our scouts during the hectic schedule of summer baseball, keeping their PBR Profile as current as possible.

The Summer Tour of open events also leads to identifying prospects for some of the summer’s biggest invite only events like Top Prospect, Future Games, State Games and more.

With batting practice, bullpens and defense, summer events allow athletes to show off their progress and development from the off-season and present the most up-to-date information on themselves.

Quick Hits is a recap of some of the top performances that stood out to us on Thursday It is not a ranking or top prospect list. Additional content including statistical leaders will be coming shortly.

‘24 INF/RHP Cameron Ames (Central Catholic) - Athletic runner with burst. 6.95 in the 60 with 3.84 in the 30. Moves the barrel easily with quick, strong hands. Line drive approach. Also 83-84 on the bump with feel for CB/CH as main secondaries.

‘24 RHP/1B Luke Haener (Wilsonville) - Extra big frame at 6’5, 220 lbs. On the mound works downhill from a high ¾ slot with heavier FB at 79-80. Lands CB/CH for strikes. Offensively has big leverage at the plate with some of the top EVs we saw on the day with a top of 97.5 mph.

‘24 OF Karsten Hansen (Capital, WA) - The top runner from the event with a 6.77 in the 60 and impressive splits with 3.73 in the 30 and 1.63 at 10 yds. Arm strength plays from the OF with accuracy and the left-handedness at the plate helps elevate his player profile.

‘24 1B Kayle Piscano (Clackamas) - The powerful LH bat continues to show some of the best raw power we’ve seen in the class. Peak EV was up to 101.4 mph with an avg of 90.7. Athletically he runs very well for his size and has quick, polished actions around the bag at 1B.

‘24 C/OF Owen Otani (Southridge) - Versatile defender with balanced tools across the board. Arm strength plays from both C & OF. Offensively shows gap to gap power from the left-side. Creates bat speed quickly in a tight window with short levers.

‘24 INF/RHP Kheller Larson (Wilsonville) - 2-way prospect who did a bit of everything throughout the day. 6.98 runner in the 60 with arm strength that works from the left-side of the INF (84) and on the mound (80-82). Offensively gets power from the hands with a flatter, level path through the zone.

‘24 OF Lucas Larson (Wilsonville) - One of the fastest players at the workout. Posted a 6.92 in the 60 with a 3.81 30 yd and 1.67 10 yd split, showing quick burst and acceleration. Athleticism translates to the OF & there’s enough arm strength to stick. Simplified LH swing at the plate with a gap to gap type approach.

‘25 OF/INF Jack Barss (Lakeridge) - 6’1, 175 lb athlete with clean actions and versatility on the diamond. Showed quick hands in the zone with barrel that covers depth. Chance to add more strength as he develops.

‘25 OF Brayden Buck (Tualatin) - Continues to show a potent bat from the left-side with a tight, compact move. Turns barrel early with short, powerful levers. Impacts the ball to all fields when he connects. Good burst out of the gate and when moving in the OF. Above average arm strength

‘25 INF/RHP Jonathan Ingalls (Jesuit) - 2-way prospect with physical, wide & sloped upper half and frame to add strength. Sound defender with controlled fielding actions. Power potential at plate with leverage from lower half and slightly uphill swing plane. Quality stuff on the mound with FB currently 83-84 to pair with CB/CH.

‘25 OF/LHP Lance McKey (Central Catholic) - L/L OF prospect who flashed quality contact throughout BP and produced impressive pop from his frame. Up to 94 peak EV with a classic, uphill finish from the left-side. Hits from a wide base and stays balanced throughout.

‘25 C Carter Stewart (Jesuit) - High level receiver with control of a strong glove hand. Presents a compact target with low hips behind the dish. Comes out of crouch easily with strong, accurate throws to the bag. Short, direct left-handed swing with quality pound for pound contact when he impacts the ball.

‘26 OF Andrew Ha (Lakeridge) - Speedy, athletic OF prospect who can really get moving out of the gate and maintain speed underway. 6.8 runner with an impressive 3.78 split in the 30. Both arm strength and EV have shown improvement since our previous look while not compromising the speed tool.

'26 SS/RHP Jacob Rolling (Jesuit) - Wiry, twitchy athlete with lean strength throughout. Everything moves fast & aggressively in all facets of the game. Rolling can really cover ground laterally at SS with crisp footwork & fast exchange. At the plate, there’s present hand speed with an ‘all fields’ type approach. On the mound, features a live arm with a current FB at 76-78 to go with his CB/CH

‘26 OF/RHP Cole Sauter (Sunset) - Strong, compact frame with short, powerful levers. Showed impressive contact ability in BP with an avg EV of 88.2 and peak of 91.6. The narrow gap between the peak and his avg speaks to how consistent he was connecting with the barrel and staying on time. Also has plenty of arm strength from the OF that translates well to the mound where he’s 78-80 with a hard CB/SL and downer CH.

‘26 INF/RHP Jace Willett (Century) - Projectable, rangy athlete with 2-way potential. Terrific size/frame to grow into. Fluid movements on all sides of the ball. EV up to 94.2 with pull-side pop. Creates effortless bat speed. Arm talent shines on mound where he is currently 82-84 with aptitude for creating sharp spin on his breaker.

‘27 OF Reece Johnson (Kings Way) - Imposing presence at 6’3, 205 lbs. Creates massive loft from the left-side with a leveraged swing and uphill path. Controls the barrel well for a larger framed young player. Arm projects to be above average long-term. Moves well in the OF and has sneaky speed once he gets underway.
