Super 60: Canadian Rewind (2021-2023)

Cam Black-Araujo
Assistant Director, Prep Baseball Canada

Prep Baseball's annual Super 60 took place this past Sunday in McCook, Illinois with some of the top 2024 MLB Draft prospects in attendance alongside a boatload of pro scouts and executives as the MLB Draft season is officially underway.

While it was the first year in a while a Canadian prospect hasn't been in attendance, players north of the border have taken advantage of the event over the years and have elevated their draft stock to begin the year in Illinois.

With another Super 60 Showcase in the rearview, our staff will take a look back at the past three events and how the Canadian talent from those events have fared to begin their pro and college careers.

2021

RHP Dominic Hambley (MLB Draft League 2021)
Drafted: 2021, Chicago Cubs, 18th-round (No. 544) - Signed, $200k
Currently: Began 2023 in Single-A Myrtle Beach, before making a final 10 appearances in Rookie.

Hambley sat 92-94 T94.5mph along with a pair of high-spin breaking balls at the 2021 Super 60. Four months later he took the mound for the Williamsport Crosscutters in the MLB Draft League where he made 14 appearances before being selected by the Cubs that summer.

Over two full seasons, mostly in Rookie, Hambley has pitched 66.1 innings.

2022

INF Nate Ochoa (MLB Draft League 2022)
Drafted: 2022, Washington Nationals, 6th-round (No. 171) - Signed, $375k
Currently: Played the entirety 2023 in Rookie where he played 28 games, slashing .290/.371/.366.

2023 was Ochoa’s first full campaign in pro ball and he spent the full year in Rookie where he slashed .290/.371/.366 with two triples and three doubles. He also played 6+ games at three different positions… shortstop, first base and left field. While the strikeout numbers were up this year, he showed the ability to put the ball in play and reach base.

RHP Micah Bucknam (MLB Draft League 2022)
Drafted: 2021, Toronto Blue Jays, 17th-round (No. 482) - Did Not Sign
Currently: Sophomore, LSU. Made eight appearances for seven innings as a freshman in 2023 en route to a National Championship.

Bucknam was originally drafted out of high school before deciding not to sign and take a gap-year before heading to Baton Rouge. Bucknam saw the mound early on in the season ahead of conference play and ultimately won the National Championship alongside the top two picks in the MLB Draft.

Bucknam returns to LSU for his sophomore season.

2023

INF Sam Shaw
Drafted: 2023, Toronto Blue Jays, 9th-round (No. 274) - Signed, $272.5k
Currently: Played nine games in Rookie following the draft, going 6-for-29 with two doubles and ten walks to six strikeouts in 40 plate appearances.

Shaw was just drafted in July 2023 and had 40 plate appearances over nine games in Rookie to begin his pro career. The BC native slashed .207/.425/.276 with a pair of doubles and ten walks to just six strikeouts.

2024 will be the first full pro campaign for Shaw.
