Ottawa/Gatineau Preseason ID: Quick Hits

Cam Black-Araujo
Assistant Director, Prep Baseball Canada

On Friday, March 1st, the Prep Baseball Ontario staff hosted it's second Preseason ID of the year with the Ottawa/Gatineau Preseason ID at the Bell Sensplex in Kanata, Ontario and the event gives players a chance to showcase their offseason developments prior to their spring trips down South. The event also serves as an identifier and qualifier for our Select Series Events such as Future Games (2026), Jr. Future Games (2028/2029), Senior Future Games (2025), West Coast Games (2025/2026) Best of the West (18U & 15U), NY State Games (2025-2027) and NorthEast Senior Games (2025).

This event featured roughly 30 prospects from the Ottawa and Monteal areas in the 2024 - 2027 classes and allowed our staff an opportunity to get an in-depth look at the players, as well as collect updated metrics via our tech partner TrackMan.

Earlier this week, we broke down the top measurable data performers from the event with our Statistical Analysis, Pitching Data Dive and Hitting Data Dive. Now, we will conclude our post-event coverage within this Quick Hits article as we bring you scouting notes and video on six players who caugh our staff's attention at the event.

OTTAWA/GATINEAU PRESEASON ID: QUICK HITS

Will Watson OF / Nepean , ON / 2025

‘25 OF Will Watson was one of the top performing positional players at the event and it was our second look at the Canada Reds Academy prospect in as many weeks. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound outfielder started the day by running a 6.97 60-yard dash, tied for the best at the event. His outfield velocity of 82mph was also tied for best at the event. At the dish, the right-handed hitter works gap-to-gap with a line-drive approach and generated a peak exit velocity of 86.5mph and distance of 266ft.

Riley Stamplecoskie OF / 1B / St. Peter High School, ON / 2026

‘26 OF/1B Riley Stamplecoskie was one of the more physical players at the event with his 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame and it showed throughout his round of BP. The bat and strength at the dish look to be the carrying tools right now as he generated some loud swings from the right-side with a peak exit velocity of 92.9mph and peak distance of 270ft.

Ben Paul OF / 1B / St. Francis Xavier, ON / 2025

‘25 OF/1B Ben Paul put together one of the best overall performances on Friday and looks the part with his 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame. The left-handed hitter impressed with his round of BP where posted the top exit velocity at 94.1mph (87.8mph avg) and a peak distance of 315ft. Worked with a line-drive approach to the middle of the field and found the Sweet Spot at a clip of 64%. Also worked up to 82mph from the outfield and ran a 7.24 60-yard dash.

Erik Fritz 2B / SS / Cairine Wilson, ON / 2026

‘26 MIF Erik Fritz is somewhat undersized at 5-foot-9, 155-pounds but possessed one of the better looking swings at the event. The left-handed hitter consistently worked gap-to-gap throughout his round with a Sweet Spot % of 63. Put together a peak exit velocity of 90.5mph and peak distance of 268ft and the numbers should continue trending upwards as he fills out over the next several years.

Jean-Philippe Guilbeault SS / École Secondaire Saint-Gabriel, QC / 2025

‘25 SS Jean-Phillipe Guilbeault continues to be one of the top performers every time he attends an event. The 5-foot-6, 142-pound middle infielder does a lot of things right and started the day by running a 6.99 60-yard dash. Stands out on the infield with quick, active feet and an 80mph arm across the diamond. At the dish, the right-handed hitter looks to utilize the entire field to get on-base and use his speed.

Olivier Mantha RHP / Polyvalente Saint-Jerome, QC / 2026

‘26 RHP Olivier Mantha put together one of the best bullpens on Friday and looks like there’s plenty more to come with his uber-projectable 6-foot-4, 165-pound frame. The fastball sat 76-78mph and he gets downhill, creating good extension and allowing the pitch to play up. Offspeed consists of a curveball at 67-68mph with more horizontal shape and a changeup at 71-73mph. Interesting arm out of the 3L Rive-Nord program to keep tabs on this summer as he continues to develop.
