On Saturday, February 3rd the Prep Baseball Ontario staff hosted the annual Canadian College & University Showcase at BP Sports Park in Welland, Ontario. This event featured 30 prospects from the across the province in the 2024 and 2025 classes looking to play college baseball within Ontario and Canada. The event featured roughly a dozen college coaches within the province and allowed our staff an opportunity to get an in-depth look at the players, as well as collect updated metrics via our tech partner TrackMan.

Earlier today we began our post-event coverage within our Statistical Analysis story. Below, we continue our post-event content as we provide scouting notes and video on nine standouts from the showcase.

CANADIAN COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY SHOWCASE: QUICK HITS

Phillip Ledgister C / OF / Holy Spirit , NL / 2024

Joining us all the way from Newfoundland, Ledgister has progressed well since last spring’s Future Games Trials. The left-handed hitting backstop comes equipped with some physicality at 6-foot, 205-pounds, good for a maximum exit velocity of 91mph. Simple and relaxed at the dish from an upright position that will play for power to the gaps when he lifts the ball. Strong lower half that hinges well around his front leg.

Mathew Richmond RHP / Blessed Trinity , ON / 2024

The Bullettproof Prospect had a good showing at his home facility, highlighted by pitchability that should make him a target for Canadian post-secondary programs. A two-pitch guy, Richmond sat 78-80 T80.7mph out of the stretch and flashed a downer breaking ball that could play as a strikeout pitch down the line. Works downhill from a  clean, overhand arm action. Slender 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame that still has room for velocity growth.

James Craig 1B / RHP / South Huron District , ON / 2024

Out of the Ontario Nationals, Craig is a burly left-handed hitting first baseman that projects as a potential power bat in the Canadian college ranks. Put together the top average exit velocity on the day at 86.3mph, topping out at 90.7mph with a peak distance of 325ft. There’s a tendency to cast with the hands that we’ve seen largely cleaned up since the fall season, but Craig’s power potential is clear at 6-foot-2, 220-pounds.  The bat should play as is, but expect further jumps at the plate as he continues to clean up the mechanics and refine his game.

Jack Angel C / Harbord Collegiate Institute, ON / 2024

2024 C Jack Angel had an all-around impressive showing at Saturday’s event in Welland. The athletic 6-foot, 185-pound catcher swings it from the left side and utilizes a simple, quiet load with loose hands that worked mostly up the middle during his round. There is some juice in his bat, as he generated a peak exit velocity of 93.2mph and a sweet spot % of 69.2. Behind the dish, Angel showed clean actions with an accurate arm that consistently hit the 2B target, and to cap off an already impressive day, Angel ran a 6.71s which was the top time at the event. An all-around good start to the 2024 campaign for the uncommitted catcher.

Nathan Lawrence RHP / RHP / Uxbridge Secondary School, ON / 2024

2024 RHP/INF Nathan Lawrence had one of the better bullpens we saw at the 2024 Canadian College & University Showcase. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound right-hander works from a ¾ arm slot with a strong lower-half. He filled the zone with his FB/CB/CH mix with the FB living 76-78mph and consistently located at the bottom part of the zone with plus movement. The Ontario Prospect two-way player would be a good addition to any Canadian College/University roster.

Baeden Agnew 2B / RHP / St John Henry Newman Catholic Secondary School , ON / 2025

2025 2B/RHP Baeden Agnew has an athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 157-pounds with plenty of projection left. He works out of the stretch from a ¾ arm slot and utilizes a three-pitch mix of FB/SL/CH. His Fastball sat 78-80mph with feel for the zone, coupled with a slider that breaks well off the fastball and a changeup that offers some fade. Agnew also showcased a simple, repeatable left-handed swing where he keeps his feet level with the ground to stay on time. His peak exit velocity clocked in at 89.1mph which will trend upwards as he continues to grow. The young two-way still has a lot left in the tank.

Russell DuHamel RHP / 3B / Humberside, ON / 2024

2024 RHP/INF Russell DuHamel put together one of the better bullpens we saw in Welland. Started out his day on the mound and sat 83-85 with the fastball, topping out at 85.8mph. Also, flashed a slider that had bite to it, that also had a total average spin of 2581rpm and has a change-up, in which he does a really good job killing the spin on, at an average spin rate of 1207rpm. There is aggression as he works down the mound and gets his back leg through, with more in the tank. Overall an uncommitted 2024 that possesses a good repertoire to pitch at the next level.

Jack Comper RHP / SS / Sacred Heart , ON / 2024

2024 RHP/2B Jack Comper was one of the better arms we saw at the event. Works from a clean 3 ⁄ 4 arm slot and ran the FB to 82mph. Also, displayed feel for his sinker, which was consistently low and in the zone. Still developing a feel for the slider, which has good shape to it. There is definitely more in the tank for Comper, as he progresses. Jack an uncommitted 2024, that will fit right in with a Canadian program and have an arsenal that can play at the next level.

Samuel Szokola 1B / 3B / St Marys Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2025

2025 INF/RHP Samuel Szokola showed flashes on both sides of the ball at the Canadian College and University showcase. On the mound, Samuel works with a smooth and repeatable delivery that topped out at 79.8mph. At the plate Samuel has a simple, yet explosive swing. Can create elevation with the baseball, when hitting to his pull side. A young 2025 grad, who’s got a good base to work off of going into his sophomore campaign.
