Uncommitted 2021 Spotlight: Luke Berni
Background: Luke Berni has been on the scene for a few years now, but at the 2nd annual Canadian College and University Showcase, he was something of a standout. A product of the Etobicoke Rangers, Berni, the nephew of former Red Sox farmhand Denny Berni, has bloomed into a 6-4, 180-pound outfielder with some bat speed (94 exit) and arm strength (87 exit). While he’s grown into his body, there’s still room for physical growth. He doesn’t get cheated at the plate, and while there’s nothing wrong with being committed to swinging hard at the plate at all times, he can get caught on his front foot at times. But if his issue at the dish is timing, he’s got two more summers of high school ball to clean it up.
Outlook: Berni always had the tools to be an impact outfielder with his long limbs and slender frame, but this summer has a chance to be a bit of a coming out party for him. At our event, he caught some barrel and it was loud, his throws from the outfield were violent, and his footwork was fairly clean. He’ll be playing on the 17U team for the Rangers this summer, so keep an eye out for him, and don’t be surprised if his power numbers take a jump.
