Tournament 12 at Rogers Centre: Game One

The second annual Tournament 12 showcase baseball tournament at Rogers Centre looks to highlight the best Canadian amateur players with college eligibility. Eight teams will represent the Canadian provinces and PBR has all the coverage.

Tournament 12 at Rogers Centre - Game one

The first game of Tournament 12 featured many highly touted prospects from Ontario Green and the Futures Team and both squads did not disappoint.

Ontario Green is full of players that can change the flow of the game with their speed and athleticism. This morning they put that on full display by swiping five bags. Royce Ando and Ian Wilson, both 2015 grads led the way with two steals, while outfielder Tristan Pompey chipped in with a bag of his own.

At the plate for Ontario, leadoff hitter Ando did his job by getting on base and coming across to score three of Ontario’s seven runs. Wilson ended up 1-4 with a double and two runs scored, Pompey was 2-4 with two runs scored, and 2015 uncommitted grad Miles Gordon went 1-3 with two RBIs and a sac fly.

On the mound for Ontario, 2016 right-handed pitcher Nick Virdo started and was able to put keep the Future’s team off the board for his three innings of work. Virdo’s fastball sat 82-84, topping out at 85 while showing the ability to throw his curveball for strikes.

Virdo was followed by Michael Brettell who was very efficient in his two, very quick innings. Brettell was up to 87 with his fastball and was able to finish hitters off with a sharp slider that sat 80-82. Brettell is a 2015 uncommitted right-hander from Great Lake Canadians.

RJ Freure came into close the door and worked through some control issues in his two innings to shut down any hopes of a comeback for the Futures Team. Freure topped out at 89 with his fastball and finished the day with five punch outs.

For the Futures Team, even though they came out on the losing side, there were still plenty of positives for recruiters in the stands.

2017 grad Cooper Davis, who came away with the best 60 time yesterday posting a 6.45, went 1-3 with a stolen base and two well tracked plays in the outfield that he made look easier than it should have.

Dalton Harvey, a 2015 right-handed pitcher battled through his three innings of work using his fastball that was clocked at 86. He finished the day with three strikeouts, one walk, and five runs that were all unearned.

Other Notables


6-foot-4 190-pound left-handed pitcher and first baseman Matt Warkentin produced solid contact for Ontario in his four plate appearances. Warkentin ended up 1-4 with an RBI but was robbed on a ball in the gap by the speedy centerfielder Davis of the Futures team.

2016 catcher Max Wright also hit the ball hard, ending up 1-3 on the day while handling Ontario’s pitching staff behind the dish.
