Spoljaric Has Sights Set High On Baseball Future

LISLE, Ontario - Improvement on the mound, especially with the offspeed, has Turner Spoljaric anxiously looking ahead to his future in baseball.

“My mechanics have really improved,” pointed out the National High School junior. “I’ve shortened my arm path and that’s helped me out a lot. I’ve also gotten more confident in my curve and change and I’m working on a slider. I’m also quicker to the plate.”

It all, hopefully, adds up to reaching the ultimate dream in the sport.

“I started thinking about college baseball when I was 14 or 15, and I knew then it was something that I wanted to do,” reflected the second-ranked 2021 right-handed pitcher in Canada. “My dream is to play professionally and if I need to go through a university to do it, that’s what I’ll do.”

Marshall, Xavier, St. John’s, Miami of Ohio and Heartland Community College are currently the main schools that Spoljaric has talked to, with Marshall and Xavier first gaining interest at the Future Games last August.

“That was a really good experience with a lot of exposure there,” Spoljaric related in reference to the PBR event as a member of Team Canada. “We faced some really good competition which was great for me. Not that I didn’t know it before, but I learned the importance to focus on the hitter and not what people are thinking around you and not worry about who’s watching.”

That can be difficult when you are from Canada and have the desire to pitch in the states.

“It’s definitely tougher trying to get exposure in Canada,” Spoljaric admitted. “Ontario’s the best province for that, but with COVID-19 it’s been hard to get exposure.”

It has the sixth-ranked junior in Canada using whatever means he can to make contact with schools while at the same time bettering his game.
