ProCase Preview - Ontario Blue Jays
May 6, 2019
As the ProCase is right around the corner, the roster is set and the talent is impressive for this year’s event. Dan Lang Field will host players from the Toronto Mets, Ontario Blue Jays, Fieldhouse Pirates, Ontario Terriers, Great Lake Canadians, Stoufville Yankees, Ontario Royals and ABC Académie. These ballplayers have a chance to start the spring off with success and raise their stock heading into the summer. Here is a breakdown of the Ontario Blue Jays attendees.

Dasan Brown OF / SS / Abbey Park, ON / 2019Report: The top ranked prospect in the country, Brown has performed with the National Team in both his trips this year, with a more advanced approach at the plate and more contact, using the whole field with some sneaky pop at times. The hands are twitchy and bat speed from the right side. He’s polished in centre with more than enough arm strength and ability to close gaps. He will be one of the main attractions on Wednesday at Dan Lang.

Tyrell (TJ) Schofield-Sam 3B / OF / North Park , ON / 2019Rankings StateRank: 3 / POS: 1
Report: The top infield prospect, Schofield absolutely punished baseballs opening day of CPBL action and it has got to the point where you expect it to be loud. He hunts fastballs and velo is no issue for him while he can still adjust to off-speed and uses the whole field. He will start to see more balls leave the yard as he matures and gets older while he plays a solid 3B where he will stay at moving up the ladder. One of our favourites, Schofield does his talking with the bat and we can envision him carrying his performance into the ProCase. Interesting note; Schofield will see time behind the plate on Wednesday.

Brandon Deans RHP / Our Lady of Mount Carmel, ON / 2019Rankings StateRank: 14 / POS: 1
Report: First look at Deans outdoors on the weekend and he went 4 strong, fastball working in the 86-88 range and was up to 90 mph while the curveball had more downward action than in the past and garnered swings and misses, showing the ability to bury in the dirt when needed. The fastball had downward plane, worked to both sides of the plate with pitchability throughout his outing. The arm is clean in the back, gets out-front with more velocity to come in the future. Very nice way for Deans to start 2019 and he looks to carry that into the ProCase.

David Calabrese OF / St. Elizabeth CHS, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 5 / POS: 2
Report: The 2021 grad is a big time runner and the left-handed hitting outfielder is one of our picks to open eyes this Wednesday with his tools and game. Ran a 6.66 at Tournament 12 last year and has added strength to his 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame, with more to come as he matures. The swing is quiet and controlled throughout, with a line drive approach using the entire field. He plays an athletic outfield and the arm works well. Big ceiling with Calabrese and look for him to have a coming our party in 2019, if not this Wednesday. |
Jaden Brown SS / 2B / St. Marcellinus , ON / 2019Rankings StateRank: 13 / POS: 2
Report: Brown performed better at the plate in his last National Team trip with 7 knocks for the Kentucky commit. The tools, frame and strength have always been there, and Brown will flash them all together at times. He’s had some mishaps in the infield, but the athlete he is will give him more time on the dirt, although it’s not hard to envision him being more than capable in the outfield and possibly profiling into a corner position if the in game power comes in play. |
David McCabe 3B / 1B / Everest Academy, ON / 2019Rankings StateRank: 10 / POS: 2
Report: The switch-hitting corner infielder has done the work in the gym this winter as he’s trimmed down his frame while maintaining strength. Always had a knack to hit where both sides are similar, but with more power and hit coming from the left side. He will be an interesting watch and under the radar type guy who can easily stand out on Wednesday. |
Blake Buckle C / OF / Craig Kielburger , ON / 2019Rankings StateRank: 6 / POS: 3
Report: Buckle, the recent Northwest Florida commit is a familiar face at the pro-day as the left-handed hitting outfielder/catcher has attended every ProCase we’ve had. Needless to say we’ve seen Buckle grow into one of the best left-handed bats in the country and while he still sees time behind the plate, Buckle is more than adequate in the outfield as the smooth swing is his carrying tool as he projects for in-game power as he matures as a hitter and adds muscle. |
Caden Griffin LHP / OF / John McCrae , ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 3 / POS: 2
Report: Griffin, the Mizzou commit and 2020 prospect will be getting his first look at competition in Ontario as he faced rainouts in the first weekend. The undersiized lefty goes right at hitters with three pitches and does not back down. The arm is quick and clean, fastball been up to 88 and sat mid 80’s last year. Curveball is improved and changeup backs up well off his fastball. Works both sides, is efficient and when he is getting his off-speed over for strikes, he is one of the most dominant pitchers in the province.
