Pilon, Shaw Make Strong Impression At Super 60

MCCOOK, Ill. - Canadian players have made a name for themselves at recent Prep Baseball Report Super 60 events and this year appears to be no different after the performance on Sunday of Jeremy Pilon and Sam Shaw. Both made a strong impression in front of professional scouts at the 21st annual PBR event.

“Already having been drafted, Pilon looked the most comfortable on the mound and executed one of the cleaner bullpens of the day,” related Shooter Hunt of the 18th-round selection of the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2022 MLB Draft. “Up into the low-90s with a strong three-pitch mix, Pilon’s curveball showed tighter spin with depth and the changeup was thrown for strikes. He looks the part of a future starter and his all around game is mature.”

The vice president of scouting for PBR also had high praise for Shaw, the top-rated senior in British Columbia.

“Shaw was one of the bigger surprises of the event and made his way onto the list of my favorite players,” Hunt said. “Looking the part of a consummate hitter, his loose wrists and quick hands turned the barrel with some authority and presented the look of a future doubles machine.”

Both high school seniors were delighted with their performance.

“When I pitched on the big mound with all the scouts behind, that was a highlight for me,” noted Pilon, an Alabama commit in his final year at Chene Bleu High School in Quebec. “It was a well-structured event and really nice to be a part of it.”

Shaw was not only pleased to be part of an event that included participants from 33 states along with two Canadian provinces but also happy with his showing.

“It was a great event with an electric atmosphere,” said the senior at Lambrick Park Secondary School in British Columbia. “BP was great, it’s always gonna be my favourite. I just need to continue to improve at all parts of my game.”

There was a lot to like as well as learn about being a participant according to Pilon.

“Even though I knew there were a ton of scouts looking on, I stayed calm,” the 437th-ranked 2023 in North America said. “This calm will help me in the future.”

George Halim, PBR Canada Director of Scouting, was excited about what he saw out of the two Canadians that were among the 60-plus participants.

“It's easy for a kid who loves baseball as much as Shaw does to perform as relaxed as he did,” Halim said of the 5-10 180-pound left-handed hitting Xavier commit. “The swing was as advertised, and he did exactly what he was supposed to do in February.”

Pilon, the 66th-ranked 2024 left-handed pitcher in North America, also did not disappoint.

“Straight out of Quebec, Pilon is the only player at Super 60 that has ‘2022 Draft Pick’ on his resume, and he showed why,” Halim noted. “He is one of the best lefties in Canada, and we were fortunate to have an arm of his caliber with us in Chicago.”

Scouts also took notice of each.

“Yes, the scouts are interested in me and that I do some good things on the mound,” pointed out Pilon, who had the best fastball among all left-handers in the event with a 91.6 while producing the third highest curveball spin rate of all participants at 2801. “That makes me feel good. It means that all the work you put in during the past years have paid off. It’s how you get recruited. I love this.”

Shaw also conversed with those looking on.

“I talked to a couple scouts,” Shaw related. “It’s always been my dream to play in the MLB and being recognized as a prospect means a lot.”

Shaw, the 272nd-rated 2023 in North America, took it all in stride.

“I usually try not to think about scouts, I just tried to do my thing and have fun,” noted Shaw, a shortstop/outfielder who ran a 6.83 60, topped out with a 101 exit velocity and had 92 outfield velo and 84 infield velo.

Having a good time proved to be the case for Shaw.

“I’m just thankful for the opportunity to come showcase my skills and get to have a fun trip in Chicago with my mum,” Shaw concluded.
