PBR Spotlight Game: Toronto Mets 16u vs. Ontario Nationals 16u

ST. MARYS – On Saturday May 2, the 16U Toronto Mets traveled to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame to play the 16U Ontario Nationals in a double header. This day marked the 2015 PBLO season openers for each respective team. Sunny and 22 degrees, it was a perfect day to be at the ballpark.

Game one saw the Mets find a way to come out with a 4-3 victory. Runs were very hard to come by and both teams scratched and clawed anything they could across the plate. Between both teams combined, there were a total of 9 hits and 8 walks for a short 2 hour affair.

On the mound in game one for the Ontario Nationals was 2017 grad Brock Ryan. The tall right-handed pitcher was up to 82 mph with a consistent delivery throughout the game. After giving up a couple runs in the first inning, Ryan raced through the next 5 giving up no hits and striking out 6.

John Bruno came in to pitch for the Nationals with a 3-2 lead in the top of the 7th. After getting two quick outs, Bruno could not find his release point giving up 2 walks, a hit and 2 runs to give the Mets a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the 7th.

In a winning effort the Mets had four pitchers take the hill in game 1. Hayden Malenfant started the game and went 3 innings giving up one lone run. Malenfant who throws from a low-¾ arm slot had tremendous sink on his pitches giving National hitters a lot of trouble at the plate. Connor Lipinski came into the game in relief for the 4th and 5th innings. Lipinski had solid mechanics and good downward action towards the plate. Two southpaw hurlers Tony Vavaroutsos and Ben Brown pitched the 6th and 7th innings respectively. Both left-handed pitchers had good life on their fastball and both touched 80 mph. 

The left side of the infield for the Mets were very solid with the means of Daniel Carinci and Dondrae Bremner. Not a whole lot of damage was done at the plate by either side. In a losing effort Alex Orenzcuk and Brady St. Denis had some quality at bats and put some great contact on a couple of balls.

Game two was a total different story as the Mets stormed away with a 7-1 win and began the 2015 season with 2-0 record. Carinci led the way going 2-4 with an RBI and stolen base. Bremner, Liam Hicks and Vavaroutsos all each added a hit as well. The Mets found some jump in there step as they stole a total of 4 bases in game 2.

Aidan Findlay started and got the win for the Mets going 3 innings and giving up one unearned run. Findlay had a nice loose arm and seemed to have good composure throughout his outing. Trevor Lethbridge, Tyler Roberts and Danny Mahoney finished the last 4 innings surrendering no runs and making quick work of Nationals hitters. Lethbridge had a quick arm and touched 80 mph in his 2 innings of work.

Jayce Mackenzie started for the Nationals and went 4 innings. Mackenzie battled all game to find the strike zone but still gave his team a chance to win after giving up 2 runs with one of them being earned. Two left-handed pitchers Eric Wright and Sean Jensen finished the game for the Nationals struggling to keep the Mets off the board. Nationals’ outfielder Jeremy Schouppe had the lone RBI on the day with a base hit into left field.

The Mets were a little too much for the Nationals on this day.

+ Nationals RHP Brock Ryan pitched 6 innings giving up 1 earned run and striking out 8.

+ Mets infielder Daniel Carinci 3-7 with 3 stolen bases, a RBI and one run scored.

+ Mets LHP Tony Vavaroutsos pitched 1 inning, got the win, touched 80 mph and struck out 2.
