PBR Spotlight Game: Ontario Nationals 18U vs. Windsor Selects 18U
St. Marys, Ontario – The home of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame saw the 18u Windsor Selects and Ontario Nationals meet on Sunday April 26 for a league doubleheader at Kings Field in St. Marys. The Selects took two games from the Nationals they day before in Windsor by a score of 4-3 and 4-1 as this was the first games that took place of the 2015 PBLO season.
Going into Sunday both coaches were looking for high scoring affairs as Saturday combined for over 30 strikeouts in both games.
Game one saw Nationals pitcher Danny Weagle throw six innings of three hit baseball. Weagle was coming off arm troubles and this was his first start in over a year. The RHP was up to 85 MPH with a quick arm and great control of all of his pitches. His fastball had life and carried it into the 6th inning. The Nationals would walk away with a 7-1 win in game one.
In a winning effort Andy Leader was 3-3 with 2 RBI’s and a stolen base. In addition, prospect Adam Cook was 3-4 with 2 RBI’s and a stolen base. Both players led the offense for the Nationals in a hurry with a 5 run first inning and carried that throughout the ball game.
National’s pitcher Mackenzie came out of the bullpen and did a great job shutting the door with his 1 inning of work. Zach Wilcox started for the Selects but after giving up 5 runs in the first inning could not find a way to get settled. Left-handed pitcher T.Goldsmith and T.Jamieson both pitched in relief doing what they could to keep the game close. Jamieson had good sink on his pitches through his inning of work.
The Selects first baseman Beau Hunter was 1-3 with the lone RBI for Windsor.
Game two was a decisive win for the Windsor Selects as they came away with a 6-3 victory and a weekend series win of 3-1 to open up the PBLO season.
Windsor’s pitchers Blake Falkner and Josh Neposlan pitched extremely well limiting the Nationals offense to seven hits and three runs.
Falkner had a loose arm action and kept Nationals hitters off balance mixing up his pitches, not letting anyone become comfortable in the box. Windsor’s shortstop Shane Paradis made some great plays in the field with his smooth glove. Windsor made no errors which seemed to carry the team to victory. Five wild pitches from the Nats pitchers caused the game to get out of hand and saw Windsor control the outcome of the game. Leading 6-0 going into the bottom of the 7th, the Nationals clawed back in the game to make it 6-3 bringing some life to the home crowd but left the bases loaded to end the game.
Josh Morris started for the Nationals pitching 2.2 innings before having to come out of the game due to injury. Morris was consistent with his delivery but poor control of his off speed pitches seemed to be the difference.
Sean Hood-Tidmon, Dexter Collins and Jesse Fishbaum would throw in relief for the Nationals. All three had quality outings and helped keep the Nationals in striking distance.
