Ontario Youth Team - Notes from Camp
May 24, 2022
This past weekend our staff was in Vaughan for three straight days to get a look at some of the best 17U players the province has to offer. With the Canada Summer Games coming to Niagara later this summer, the Ontario Youth Team hosted their 40-Man Camp this weekend which allowed our staff to get in-game looks at some of the top 2023s and 2024s in Ontario.
Below, Josh Arce provides reports and video on four players who caught his eye over the weekend.
Preston Barr RHP / SS / University Liggett, ON / 2024Rankings StateRank: 2 / POS: 1
Barr, 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, was his usual self Sunday at the Ontario Youth Team Tryouts. He looked right on the mound living 84-86 mph with the FB topping 87 on a cold, wet day. Tunneled his CB well with sharp bite sitting in the low 70’s. There’s definitely more in the tank on the mound. At the dish, he doesn’t get cheated. Swung with intent to do damage, here he crushes a ball past the third basemen for a loud single, present bat speed. The Michigan commit still has 2 more years until he’s on campus, look for him to continue his progression as a 2-way talent.

Philip Cheong SS / 2B / Bill Crothers , ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 3 / POS: 2
Cheong, 5-foot-9, 160-pounds, was a force at the dish and had himself a weekend at the Ontario Youth Team Tryouts. Cheong looked the part on the field being the youngest player there trying out, he had multiple hits to his pull side for line drive singles. He’s a toolsy player that plays the game with style. The former JFG is still eligible to be in Lakepoint this year, as the bat, speed, and glove have been on display all year round.

Veer Wadhwani SS / 3B / Sir Oliver Mowat, ON / 2024Rankings StateRank: 16 / POS: 5
Wadhwani, 6-foot, 180-pounds, was a standout infielder at the Ontario Youth Team Tryouts all weekend long. In the field, he looked smooth, showing proper footwork on balls to his left and right and flashing a strong, accurate arm across the diamond. At the plate, Wadhwani looks stronger through his swing. He put multiple good swings on baseballs the entire weekend. The former Junior Future Gamer is taking the next step on the field and we will be watching him closely over the next 2 years.

Owen Slater RHP / OF / Brooklin, ON / 2024Slater, 6-foot-3, 165-pounds, continued his strong year on the mound at the Ontario Youth Team Tryouts. The frame is projectable, the stuff is there, we’re just waiting on the velo. None of Slater’s pitches are straight, as he flashed a good 3 pitch mix from a ¾ arms slot on Sunday. The Sinking FB lives low to mid 80’s with a sweeping SL that has a Sweep+ score of 95 and feel for the CH. Very intriguing arm from the 2024 class that creates tough AB’s for hitters.
