Ontario Youth Team - Notes from Camp II

This past weekend our staff was in Vaughan for three straight days to get a look at some of the best 17U players the province has to offer. With the Canada Summer Games coming to Niagara later this summer, the Ontario Youth Team hosted their 40-Man Camp this weekend which allowed our staff to get in-game looks at some of the top 2023s and 2024s in Ontario.

Below, Cam Black-Araujo provides notes and video on five players who caught his eye.

Lewis Foster RHP / 1B / Monarch Park, ON / 2023

Coming from a smaller program in East York, there was some buzz in the air Friday night to see how Foster would fare against some of Ontario’s big bats. The 6-foot-4, 177-pound right-hander wasn’t fazed, attacking hitters with a fastball that sat 82-84, topping out at 85. He works downhill and was able to locate up and down with the fastball, upstairs for swing/misses. There’s also feel to spin the curve at 75-77. Size, pitchability, projectability and he can spin it. A name you can expect to make a jump in the next rankings update.  

Jack Cohen RHP / Ecole secondaire catholique Renaissance, ON / 2023

Cohen got the start on Friday night and it was our first look at the Toronto Mets right-hander in some time. He continues to look the part, size wise, at 6-foot-3, 185-pounds and he worked a good first inning. The fastball sat 84-86 and he was able to locate to both sides of the plate with good arm side run. He worked with a breaking ball at 74-76 and a changeup at 77-79. More development needed on the secondary stuff but with the arm and size, there’s lots to like from Cohen going forward.

Brendan Lawson SS / 3B / Lawrence Park , ON / 2024

On Friday night Lawson put together the best performance we’ve seen this year from a 2024 positional player. After picking up three hits in league play the previous night, Lawson went 3-for-3 with a double to the backside gap and then finished up his night with a home run to CF. The projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitter has proven the bat plays and he continues to show well on the left side on the diamond. Expect this to be the summer Lawson’s name jumps onto the national scene.

David Stanley C / OF / Greenwood College, ON / 2024

In the workout ahead of Friday night’s game, Stanley displayed tools that stood out from the rest of the group. Arm strength behind the dish, runs a sub 7.00 and hits balls hard. 6-foot-1, 180-pounds and the right-handed hitter put up quality at-bats throughout the entire night, picking up a base hit and a walk. A Future Gamer last summer who continues to learn how to utilize his tools in-game.

Evan Ogston SS / Colonel By Secondary , ON / 2023

Ogston jumped out to our staff at PBR Spring Training with his hit tool and the ONC product was doing it again this weekend. It’s rare you see the 6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitter take a good pitch and he works gap-to-gap. He makes all the plays on the left side of the diamond, currently manning shortstop for ONC although it profiles at third base as well. Ogston continues to show well with the bat everytime we see him and no doubt one of the better players we’ve seen right now in the Ottawa region.
