Ontario Insider: Players to Watch at Ottawa Open ID

Ryan Mount, RHP, 2016
Background: Mount is back for final year of high school as the 55th ranked player in the class of 2016. He was 80-82 mph at last years event and his velocity went up into the summer as he became a mid 80’s guy. He showed a repeatable delivery and feel for his off-speed pitches. Will look to see improvements and gains with Mount and should be one of the better arms at the event.

Matthew Wagner, SS, 2016
Background: Left-handed bat that plays up the middle in the infield. Showed good actions defensively with high energy, was 82 mph across the diamond. Had an idea at the plate, will look to see if became stronger as that would be a key factor in his development.

Shane Brimacombe, 1B/RHP, 2017
Background: Big physical player who has added weight to his 6-foot-3, frame and is now listed at 200-pounds. Works off the mound and plays first base, the body is there, would like to see some more quick twitch actions to go along with his strength. The actions work off the mound and the arm is clean in the back. You can’t ignore the size and the 2017 has time to become strong and develop.

Corben Peters, RHP, 2017
Background: Peters broke onto the scene early in 2015, but it was clear that he had a live and projectable arm. As a 2017 grad, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed pitcher maxed out at 84 mph with raw mechanics. It’ll be interesting to see how he’s developed his secondary pitches in this his first showcase for him of the new season.

David Castillo, LHP, 2016
Background: Small frame left-handed pitcher at 5-foot-9, 150-pounds who kept his 80 mph fastball down in the zone with lots of natural movement. He filled the strike zone last year and pounded the zone with all three of his pitches. Nothing was straight and flashed signs of a promising changeup that he can back up his fastball with. Interested to see where he will be at this March.

Matthew Wiggins, RHP, 2018
Background: Have yet to see Wiggins as this will be his first PBR event but the size at 6-foot-6, 210-pounds definitely catches the eye, especially because Wiggins is a 2018 grad and put up good stats last year with the Ottawa Chiefs.

Brandon Gravel, LHP/OF, 2016
Background:
One of the more interesting players to watch, Gravel is a do-it-all guy, and his big physical frame allows him to. At 6-foot-4, 225-pounds, we’ll keep an eye on Gravel to see how the lefty has developed on the mound over the winter. Defensively he has athletic actions, and at the plate he posted an 87 mph exit velo from the left side, and 76 mph from the right side. This time around, we’ll see how he profiles before he heads off to college.
