Last weekend our staff was at the Athlete Matrix in Mississauga for the Ontario Blue Jays Scout Day as positional players showcases their talents. We got a look at multiple 2022 draft prospects, one of the top 2023s in the country and a boat load of underclassmen who's names you'll hear plenty more of throughout the next couple years.
We had our TrackMan unit on site to collect data on the hitters and pitchers throughout both days. Below, our scouting staff breaks down five arms who impressed on the mound last Friday.
Kansai Sugimoto RHP / Blyth academy, ON / 2022Sugimoto, 6-foot-2, 210-pounds, was impressive on the mound at OBJ Scout Day. Sugimoto was pounding the zone with his FB which sat 88-90 mph. It’s an effortless, fluid delivery from the RHP that looks easy, there is a lot more in the tank. CB worked off of his FB and the CH has fading action. He worked down in the zone and is definitely a very intriguing arm that screams projectability. The RHP is committed to Yavapai CC.

Liam Watt lhp / Nelson SS, ON / 2022Watt was the first pitcher on the mound that we saw at OBJ Scout Day and he didn’t disappoint. Watt threw quality strikes with his 3-pitch mix. The FB sat 85-86 mph with quick arm action and arm side run. The SL was 75-76 mph and his change up had some good looking depth and movement sitting 80 mph. The LSU Eunice commit showed out today and he projects to be an impactful arm at the next level.
|
John McDonald RHP / St- Aloysius Gonzaga S.S., ON / 2023McDonald, 5-foot-11, 155-pounds, was another RHP to impress our staff today at OBJ Scout Day. On the mound, McDonald has a quick, up-tempo delivery and was pounding the zone all bullpen. Mcdonalds FB consistently sat 87-88 mph and there's definitely more in the tank. He kept his SL down in the zone and it showed some late bite to it at 73-75 mph and his CH was 79-80 mph. The uncommitted ‘23 is definitely a pitch colleges should have on their radar going forward.

Matthew Sargeant SS / RHP / Ancaster , ON / 2023Rankings StateRank: 20 / POS: 7
Sargent was one of the more intriguing uncommitted prospects to throw at OBJ Scout Day. His strong, athletic frame was on display on the mound with his 87-89 mph FB that he located low on the corners during his bullpen. His SL is tight with a late break at the end sitting 77-78 mph and a CB that showed some more depth to it at 76-77 mph. Still uncommitted, Sergeant will be a close follow this summer.
|
Matthew Brown RHP / SS / Waterdown District High School, ON / 2024Brown, 6-foot-4, 186-pounds, is easily one of the most electric arms we saw at the OBJ Scout Day. The uncommitted RHP has a long projectable pitchers frame with loose arm action. Brown sat 88-89 mph with his FB and was all over the zone at the knees. His SL worked nicely at 79-80 mph that showed some bite to it, the CH was 82-83 mph. Brown is a good looking young pitching prospect that everyone should have their eye on, one of the top ‘24’s in the country.
