Canada Cup Day 1 - Kiwanis Park Games

Kiwanis Park, Moncton:

With the Canada Cup kicking off on Day 1 at Kiwanis Park, the weather was beautiful and all 10 provinces were spread out in action with games at Kiwanis and Lakeburn Park.

The host team New Brunswick had two games at Kiwanis, with the 7:00 start under the lights against rivals Nova Scotia, while Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland all seeing action at Kiwanis.

Below we recap the three games on slate with scores and highlights from the 17u Canada Cup.

Newfoundland 2 vs Nova Scotia 12

Recap: Nova Scotia jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they put up a 2 spot in the second inning and then exploded for 10 runs in the third. Nick Gravel, left-handed hitting second baseman from Nova Scotia had a day, going 2-3 at the plate, scoring twice and driving in two runs. He’s athletic in the infield and the hands and feet work well on the dirt. Ayden Mackenzie also had 2 RBI’s for Nova Scotia, barreling up balls to left-centre while young 15 year old Ethan McLellan worked three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit while striking out 7 and sat 79-81 with his fastball. Nova Scotia had 12 hits on the day and got themselves off to a strong start on Day 1 of games.

New Brunswick 6 vs Manitoba 3

Recap: The host team New Brunswick took on Manitoba in each teams first action, and there was lots of intense moments throughout the game on both sides, but the 4th inning was where all the action took place and New Brunswick was able to capitalize. On the mound, both starters flashed their stuff as NB 2019 left-hander Hayden Dow was 82-84 with his fastball, clean and easy actions with minimal effort and had a three-pitch arsenal. He lasted 4 â…” before giving way to Jordan Fortin who was able to shut the door on any comeback hopes from Manitoba. Fortin worked in the low 80’s, touched 85/86 once with some effort involved in his delivery. Starting on the mound for Manitoba was 16 year old Jordan Lussier. At 6-foot-2, 175-pounds, there is room to project more on the frame and Lussier’s arm works with a fastball that topped out at 87 mph and was 82-84 early on. He struck out 7 but also walked four in 3 â…“ innings of work. Shane Campbell and Trent Peters took some really nice swings from the right side for Manitoba while Jake Hruska patrolled centre-field with ease and foot speed. Some intriguing prospects on both rosters, Dow and Lussier are both two arms that schools need to be on.

Ontario 7 vs Saskatchewan 3

Recap: Ontario had a big game on their hands after a tough 2-0 loss in the early game to Quebec while for Saskatchewan, it was their first game of the week and had their big hoss in Connor Sparks, who is committed to Sacramento State for the fall of 2018. Ontario countered with 2021 left-hander Connor O’Halloran, and runs looked to be at a premium early on and they were, until the bullpens and bomb squad became involved. Colby CC commit Tyler McWillie opened up the scoring in the bottom of the 5th as he sat on a 2-2 curveball and deposited it over the left-field fence for a three-run shot and the first lead of the day. Ontario answered back immediately and by the same fashion as a two-run shot by recent 2020 commit Austin Gomm brought them within one, and then Ryan Leitch, another recent committed 2019 to Marshall let it eat with a moonshot to tie the score. Ontario was able to add on due to an error and added two more later in the 7th on a Dante Wright 2 RBI knock up the middle to put the game out of reach and a 7-3 final.

New Brunswick 7 vs Nova Scotia 3

Recap: Jackson Wilson, the 6-foot-5 right-hander starter for New Brunswick went 4 â…” innings and worked out of trouble with runners on more than once to help preserve the lead and win for NB and their second W of the day. Hayden Dow went 3-3 at the plate, driving in one and scoring three runs to ignite the offense. Starter Evan O’Toole, a 2019 right-hander for Nova Scotia drew a crowd of scouts with his athletic frame, quick arm, and fastball that was up to 89 mph on the night but struggled with his command and walks led to stressful innings and a high pitch count for the 19’ prospect. Left-handed hitting catcher Max Grant had a big RBI knock for NB early in the game and the host team is off to a hot start on day 1 and joining Quebec as the only teams with two wins under their belt.
