The Piedmont Regional will start on Wednesday May 1st in what is arguably one of the more intruiging pairings of three teams that have the ability to play their way to next week's state tournament.  Piedmont has impressed in their 6A debut in 2024, Norman North has the type of pitching staff that can give opponents fits, and Enid is arguably the most battle tested program heading into this year's postseason.  We breakdown each team's record, players to watch, and a deeper look at each team as they head into this week's regional and try to make it to the state tournament next week.

Coach Skowkoski and the Wildcats found immediate success in their first year in 6A with a largely retooled roster from their impressive run in 5A a year ago.  They amassed one of the more impressive district records in 6A going 11-3 in 6A-4 and taking home the district title.  With the Wildcats it all starts with their frontline arms with Lindley taking the reins as the Ace of the staff and Noah Aller showing pitchability working deep into games as of late.  There have been some reports of Aller showing big velocity jumps this spring and he has the type of arm talent that can give even the best offenses trouble.  Offensively, the offense runs through senior Weston Thomas who provides a unique speed/power combo in the middle of the order.  Reid Smith provides a nice punch right behind Thomas in the order and they have been able to get production out of multiple guys in the lineup throughout the season.  Piedmont might not have some of the household division one commit names that others in 6A boast, but their resume stacks up with anyone else in 6A this season with their 7 power 25 wins earning them the right to try and make it to the 6A state tournament in their first year in the class on their home field.

Coach Aylor and the Timberwolves head into the postseason with one of the more productive 1-2 punches on the mound this season in Spencer Ille and Tanner Ellis each putting together impressive outings on the mound in district games.  Both have proven themselves to work deep into games with limited production from opposing offenses and gives them a puncher’s chance against anyone in the state.  Offensively, it starts at the top with one of the fastest players in the state in Will Lundquist who has added a little more physicality to his offensive game.  Lane Evans has emerged as one of the better offensive backstops in the state providing big run production in the middle and they can stretch the lineup fairly deep with prospects like Vickrey, Aguilar, and Kirkpatrick.  Ellis has also proven at times to get hot at the plate providing some thump in the middle of the order.   The Timberwolves are coming off a tough stretch that has saw them drop their last five contests, but their pitching has remained steady allowing only 2.88 runs per game in April.

ENID PLAINSMEN

Coach Gore and the Plainsmen will look to capture the same magic they had in 2023 and make a run back to the 6A state championship game with one of the deeper rosters with tons of experience.  The results in 2024 have been a little mixed with the Plainsmen playing streaky at times but you can’t argue with how battle tested they are headed into the postseason.  Enid has played arguably the toughest schedule of anyone in the state and picked up 8 Power 25 wins along the way showing they can play and beat anyone.  The offense features one of the most talented hitters in the country for the 2024 class in Garrett Shull who has battled injuries throughout the career but still has the abilities that led him to winning our state player of the year in 2023.  Chaloupek has been a big force in the middle of the lineup all season and Hartling still always seems to find barrels each time we see him.  They also boast one of the deepest pitching staffs in the state with multiple guys capable of taking the ball as a starter.  Percival and Carlson got a bulk of the district starts early on but they can also turn to Gonzalez who has been giving them strong outings as of late.  This older club has the experience of making a deep run and are still one of the more talented clubs in the state and it would not be surprising to see them get hot and make another run in 2024.

MUSKOGEE ROUGHERS

OVERALL RECORD: 8-25

DISTRICT RECORD: 0-14

POWER 25 WINS: 0

It’s been tough sledding in 2024 for Coach Singler in the Roughers that saw them go winless in district play as well as not picking up a win against a 5A or 6A opponent all spring.  To their credit you can tell they haven’t quit on the season yet playing multiple tight games down the stretch with multiple tight games in the month of April.  The good news for the Roughers is they sport one of the youngest rosters across all of 6A and the experience gained from the younger players on the roster in 2024 should pay dividends to help propel the program forward in the future.  The Roughers did pull off one of the more surpsing upsets in 2023 in their first round matchup against host Broken Arrow and will look to try and capture that magic once again in 2024.
