OK Rankings Update: Class of 2022

Andy Urban
OK/MO/KS Executive Scouting Director

With the last major overhaul to the 2022 rankings released in January and the loss of most of the spring season, this edition of the rankings will not be a major shakeup, but rather an opportunity to tighten up the 115 player list. The newcomers and risers on this list come from the looks we got at the very talented OK Preseason All-State Showcase and the scrimmages and games we were able to take in this spring.

As evidenced by an impressive 12 players in the newly updated Overall Rankings, this group continues to make a name for themselves on the national scene, with many more building a strong case to jump onto the list in the future. Below, the PBR Oklahoma staff takes an in-depth look at the top 3 prospects, each of which are in the overall top 100, as well as the top newcomers, risers, and a glance at the top 10.

Top 3

One of the best young left-handers in the country, currently ranked in the top 20 overall in PBR’s coverage area, Kyndon Lovell (Lookeba-Sickles HS) rises into the top spot in the Oklahoma Class of 2022 Rankings. The 6-foot, 160-pound lean athlete uses a very short and quick arm action coming through a high-¾ slot with elite arm speed. Lovell is generally in the zone at 87-89 mph when fresh flashing some arm-side run. There have been multiple recent reports that Lovell has moved into the low 90s consistently now. More impressive than the fastball velo is Lovell’s feel for an elite breaking ball at 75-76 mph with 1/7 shape, tight spin, and late depth, consistently in the zone. He also mixes in a solid changeup at 74-75 mph.

Oklahoma State commit, SS Jackson Holliday (Stillwater HS), maintains his top 50 overall ranking and No. 2 spot in the OK rankings. The left-handed hitter was off to a hot start for Stillwater at the dish, picking up where he left off at last summer’s Future Games. Holliday does not yet jump on the page with his measurables, what he does show is an elite ability to recognize pitches and control the barrel leading to hard contact against some of the best arms in the class. One of the younger players in the 2022 class, Holliday has just started to put on size and strength with much more to come.

Filling the third spot in the very talented OK 2022 class is the physically advanced Oklahoma commit SS/RHP Caden Powell (Clinton HS). An impressively strong 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame that continues to get better, the right-handed hitter already shows one of the top exit velos in the state of any class, 95 mph, with enough barrel control to turn it in to elite level production. In the one regular season game Clinton played this spring, Powell went 3-for-3 with a double, 2 RBIs, and a walk from the leadoff spot. Defensively, while still playing SS for his highschool team, Powell will likely have to move to third base at the next level as he continues to develop with size and strength. Though more currently advanced with the bat, Powell’s size and arm strength also serves him well on the mound.

Newcomers

Gabe Davis, RHP, Choctaw HS
One of the most physically impressive arms in the state, Davis stands 6-foot-7, 190-pound with some strength already and room to add much more. Already consistently in the zone and sitting at 82-84 mph and touching 85 , there is much more to come as he throws with below average effort using a clean arm action. The slider is advanced at 68-71 with 10/4 shape and late depth. Davis also shows some feel for a changeup and a curveball.

Brae Alonzo, 2B, Norman North HS
A 5-foot-9, 165-pound proportional frame. Alzo jumps into the rankings after showcasing a polished right-handed swing that found consistent barrels in BP at the Preseason All-State Showcase and should play the same way against good arms. Alzo is also a solid runner at 7.08 and a sure handed infielder.

Risers

Colyn Mcnair, 3B/RHP, Blanchard HS
A physical 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame, Mcnair saw almost all of his measurables tick up at the OK Preseason All-State Showcase. He followed that up with lots of productivity at the dish, showing home run power, and on the mound for Blanchard in the early spring filling up the zone in the low 80s.

Logan Lunceford, SS/RHP, Edmond Santa Fe HS
Another big winner at the OK Preseason All-State Showcase was the now 6-foot, 165-pound Lunceford. A legit two-way prospect, Lunceford improved his numbers across the board. On the mound, he has proven to be an advanced strike thrower with excellent feel for his off-speed. Defensively, Lunceford is advanced as well with efficient feet, soft hands, and a big arm across the infield at 86 mph. Offensively, he barreled line drives to all fields and showed an 84 mph exit velo.
