CARROLL - It was admittedly a long recruiting process for Markus Roberson, but when Eastern Michigan came into the picture things began to move forward with a college commitment eventually reached.

“It started with my high school coach telling me about them and me reaching out to them,” the Bloom Carroll senior reflected. “First I went to a camp there with Launch. After that, they saw me in Indiana where I threw well. They had me on a visit two weeks later and I committed three days after the visit.”

The 29th-rated 2025 right-handed pitcher in Ohio pointed to “the fit” as part of what stood out about the Mid-American Conference school.

“I like what the coaches saw in me and in their program,” Roberson explained. “I have family 10 minutes away in Ypsilanti and I have teammates going there, so it seems like the right decision to make.”

Akron, Oakland, Findlay and Lake Erie were others Roberson had been in talks with during his recruitment.

“It was definitely a long process,” Roberson related. “At times it felt like it was going nowhere. (Launch) Coach (Andrew) Westbrook helped get my name out there and PBR, of course, with me throwing well helped in getting my name out. The bad things were the dead spots. I had to keep reaching out.”

Eastern Michigan came away impressed with the 6-2 210-pounder.

“How I spin the ball,” the 17-year-old pointed out about what attracted EMU. “They like my frame and like how I can fill it up in the zone. Plus, how I am as a person.”

It was just a year ago that the 79th-ranked senior in the state became confident he had a future in college baseball.

“I always wanted to play but last year I realized I had a chance and started working harder than I used to,” Roberson said. “Making the Launch team changed everything for me.”

The newly developed strong work ethic was followed by improvement.

“Strides in the weight room, working every day and throwing every day with friends helped,” Roberson pointed out. “In the fall I was 82-84 at the Eastern camp and they wanted to see it rise. I was up to 87-89 when they saw me at Grand Park.”

Bloom Carroll coaches Jason Vest, Corey Zeller, John Garvin and Jimmy Hinkel are credited by Roberson as being influential in his baseball journey.

“They saw me as a freshman and believed in me,” Roberson explained. “They pushed me and I can’t thank them enough.”

Making the commitment official was memorable.

“It was a feeling I’ve never felt before getting off the phone,” Roberson related. “It was exciting and a little emotional. I’ve wanted to do this since I was a young kid.”

It has Roberson, a 3.4 student planning to major in exercise science, in high anticipation about his future at the university located 31/2 hours from home.

“I’m looking forward to the family part of things,” Roberson said. “Traveling with them will be fun. The team aspect of it and playing baseball will be fun, too.”

The Bloom Carroll High School senior is ready to do his part.

“I’ll bring a hard worker, someone who will be a great teammate,” Roberson concluded. “I’m ready to make an impact on the field. I’m someone who wants to win.”
