Mommers Finds The Perfect Culture At Bowling Green

ROCKY RIVER - Josh Mommers believes he has found what he was searching for in a college baseball program.

“I want that culture aspect of everyone working for each other,” the Bowling Green commit explained. “It makes baseball fun, dudes going out ready to compete.”

That was just part of what stood out about BG for the Rocky River incoming senior.

“I really like the campus,” noted Mommers, who visited the university located two hours from home on June 24. “It’s a great fit for me and my family. It’s not huge and not small. They have first-class facilities and the weight room is awesome.”

Akron, Lake Erie, Findlay and Penn were among the other schools being considered by the top-rated 2025 second baseman in Ohio, whose interest from colleges heated up this past school year.

“Since I started playing, college baseball has always been a goal for me,” Mommers said. “It became realistic this winter when the first coach reached out to me. It all started post football when I got my first text.

“It was very long for me and very stressful,” the recently-turned 18-year-old continued about his recruiting process. “I’d make a list of schools, then I’d hear from another one that wasn’t on the list.”

The 38th-ranked senior in the state pointed to the Top Prospect Games as a big help at the outset of summer, with T3 Warhawks coach Ryan Rua also playing a vital role.

“I’m not sure where I’d be without that team,” Mommers said of the Warhawks. “Coach Rua was very influential in how he handled the ins and outs of recruiting.”

Bowling Green, which first saw Mommers during a high school game, found a lot to like about the 5-11 182-pound left-handed hitting middle infielder.

“They were looking for another infielder and (assistant) coach (Matt) Rembielak said they really like the athletic type,” Mommers explained. “They’re big on athletic ability. I’m a two-sport athlete, a QB1, and they have one on their team right now.” 

The eighth-rated 2025 uncommitted player in Ohio prior to his decision to make BG home, pointed to an improved game with benefitting the cause in his recruitment.

“I’m always trying to be bigger, faster, stronger,” Mommers related. “I’ve been working hard on being more consistent in my game, my approaches, my ABs, my defense. The main focus has just been to be better all-around.”

Mommers, who was quick to give credit to his parents for all the support they have provided, is confident about making an impact in the Mid-American Conference program at Bowling Green.

“I’ll bring a good quality bat with power in it,” Mommers said. “Consistency, good approach, solid defense, hard-nosed player. I have something to prove and nothing to lose. I’ll be a dirtbag.”

Business is a potential college major for the 3.8 Rocky River student, who is thrilled to be done with his recruitment while at the same time excited for what lies ahead.

“It’s a relief, but I can’t stop working,” Mommers said. “It’s just the beginning. I’ve got to work even harder now. I want to put on a little size in the offseason, clean up some areas I struggle with, get bigger, faster, stronger, more consistent. I just want to be a better overall player.”
