Division IV Team Of The Week: Week 6 - Newton

PLEASANT HILL - With 18 wins in its first 20 games, Newton has been doing the things that head coach Jordan Kopp has wanted thus far.

“The big thing that has stood out so far is our consistency in all aspects of the game,” explained the mentor of the Prep Baseball Division IV Team of the Week. “We haven’t let any negative plays affect our overall play. We are playing very good baseball right now and excited to see how things play out over the next couple weeks.”

This past week the Indians sandwiched 10-0 wins over D-IV Tri Village and Covington around a pair of victories over D-III schools, National Trail 6-1 and Arcanum 5-4.

“We are a very young team and pitching was our big concern as we didn’t have a ton of experience on the mound,” noted Kopp. “But we have had four guys step up.”

Austin Tippie, Ty Schauer, Cole Alexander and Rhett Koffer have provided the pitching needed for the ninth-ranked Division IV team in Ohio.

“Last week we had two big pitching performances by Ty Schauer against National Trail, and then Austin Tippie and Cole Alexander versus Arcanum,” Kopp pointed out.

Schauer is now 7-0 with a save and a 0.521 ERA, striking 36 in 40.1 innings. The senior is aided by youth, with Tippie and Koffer sophomores and Alexander a freshman. Tippie is 4-1 with a 1.26 ERA, fanning 44 in 33.1 frames. Koffer is 2-1 with 23 Ks in 19.1 innings while Alexander is 2-0 with a save, striking out 19 in 16.1 frames.

Tippie leads the team in batting at .407 with Alexander hitting .377, sophomore Will Bowser .348, senior Brady Dowing .323 and sophomore Carson Resides .303. Tippie has 17 RBIs and Dowing 16 while Alexander has scored 18 runs, Koffer 17 and Schauer and Bowser 16 apiece.

The team also has 70 stolen bases led by Schauer with 18, Alexander 16 and Koffer 13.

“Our offense has been a nice surprise,” related Kopp. “We are hitting the ball well and backing that up with playing great defense.”

A league title will be on the line Thursday when the Indians, tied for first at 7-1, play Dixie.

“The key to our success moving forward is playing good defense and throwing strikes,” Kopp said. “If we can continue to do that, we have a chance to make a tournament run.”
