Division I Team Of The Week: Week 7 - Springboro
SPRINGBORO - Pitching continues to carry Springboro, which improved to 24-2 with four solid wins last week.
“We had high expectations entering the season,” noted Mark Pelfrey, head coach of the Prep Baseball Division 1 Team of the Week. “We have a lot of experience back from last year and our pitching has been excellent all year.”
The senior trio of Josh Booth, Luke Burroughs and Jackson Saylor are a combined 18-0 on the season for the state’s third-rated team in the Prep Baseball Power 25.
Saylor threw a complete game in a 4-1 victory over Fairmont, the first Greater Western Ohio Conference loss for the eighth-ranked team in the state, highlighting a week for the Panthers that included a 6-3 win over Monroe, a 10-2 triumph over Lebanon and a 5-4 victory versus Roger Bacon. Both Springboro and Fairmont finished 13-1 in the GWOC.
An Ohio Northern commit, Saylor is now 5-0 on the season. Booth, a Marietta recruit, is 7-0 for the year while Burroughs, a Clark State signee, is 6-0 for the 24-2 Panthers. Saylor is the 116th-rated 2024 RHP in Ohio and Booth the 132nd ranked while Burroughs is rated 52nd.
Zack Gardner, the 13th-ranked senior third baseman in Ohio, is having a big year for Springboro with a 2-1 record to go along with two saves. At the plate, the Clark State commit is batting a team-best .476 with 13 doubles and 42 RBIs.
Four other Panthers have made college commitments. Outfielders Ammon Vaughn and Tyler Phillips are headed to Miami Middletown and Washington University (Mo.), respectively, while P/OF Jentsen Musgrove is an Edison State recruit and P/1B Joseph Mossbarger is a Mount St. Joseph signee.
Springboro, which lost to Fairmont 5-4 in eight innings earlier in the season for its only GWOC defeat, own a pair of extra-inning wins this year including a 4-3 nine-inning victory over Badin on a Jake Cane walk-off home run.
The Panthers are batting .330 as a team with sophomore Ben Veletean at .371, Cane .358, Mossbarger .351 and senior Wyatt Standifer .321.
Springboro will begin tournament play on Thursday against the winner of tonight’s game between Xenia and Stebbins.
