Division I Team Of The Week: Week 5 - Clay
OREGON - There were two extra-inning wins as well as a walk-off triumph during a five-victory week for Clay, moving the Eagles to sixth in the state and with it recognition as the Prep Baseball Division I Team of the Week.
“We had a lot of experience returning and when you have a 1-2 punch on the mound like we have there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic,” explained Clay head coach Jim Phillips, whose 13-1 Eagles defeated Napoleon 4-3 and 3-0 in nine innings, topped Anthony Wayne 6-5 in eight innings and edged St. Francis 5-4 on a Drake Sekinger walk-off double before beating St. Francis again 7-3. “The resiliency of this team has stood out. When we have gotten down in games we have not panicked. Instead, the leaders of this team have led and we have continued to find ways to get the job done.”
Vinny Gallaher threw a no-hitter with 10 Ks and one walk in the nine-inning win over Napoleon after C.J. Boudreaux gave up two earned runs and one walk with 13 Ks in the 4-3 victory over Northern Lakes League rival Napoleon. Gallaher, the 23rd-rated senior right-handed pitcher in the state, is an Eastern Michigan commit while Boudreaux, the 21st-ranked 2024 RHP in Ohio, is signed with Bowling Green.
For the season, Gallaher has not permitted an earned run in 24.1 innings, striking out 36 and giving up just seven hits with a 4-0 record. Boudreaux stands 5-0 with a 0.538 ERA, fanning 48 in 26 innings with only 11 hits allowed. Luke Jeremy won two games in relief this past week with more mound depth coming from Landon Eversman and Grady Spears, a senior committed to Owens.
Gallaher also leads Clay at the plate with a .467 average, driving in 17 and scoring 14 runs. Ohio Dominican commit Nolan Schacht, the 59th-ranked senior catcher in the state, is batting .421 with 18 runs, Brock Fussell is hitting .385 with 12 RBIs and Sekinger, a Lourdes University signee rated 31st among senior outfielders in Ohio, is at .364 with 15 RBIs. Bordeaux carries a .333 average with 14 runs scored and Jeremy is batting .306.
“I’m surprised how much chemistry this team has,” Phillips said about the Eagles, which are 9-0 and in first place in the Northern Lakes League Cardinal Division. “Minimizing defensive mistakes and executing in big situations is the key to continued success.”
