'Waiting Game' For Northeastern Senior Peters

SOUTH VIENNA - Garrett Peters is playing the “waiting game” right now.

The Northeastern senior is not only waiting for the right college baseball offer, he is biding his time until he can show schools he is 100 percent healthy.

“Being known as a left-hander in Ohio, I was thinking summer ball of junior season I would probably be committed,” Peters related. “But after surgery, now I look at it as long as I’m 100 percent the right opportunity will jump at me. When? I don’t know. It’s the waiting game.”

The 70th-ranked 2020 in the state began the recruiting process with a visit to Ashland while playing 16U summer ball with Bo Jackson.

“During fall ball more colleges became interested,” Peters reflected. “In high school season junior year coach (Dan) McKinney at Akron said he liked what he saw and wanted to see me come and pitch. But two weeks later my arm started hurting.”

It was determined the elbow pain was caused by a bone spur. Two weeks following, Tommy John Surgery took place on May 17.

“It was a difficult year for sure,” Peters admitted. “Since the day I stepped on a baseball field I knew I wanted to do this the rest of my life. Sitting out and watching my brothers play was pretty hard but I knew I had to go through it to get better than I was before.”

Recruitment returned in the fall when the 6-1 190-pounder was invited on a visit to Charleston in mid-October.

“I loved everything about it,” Peters said of the Division II school in West Virginia. “But I wasn’t fully sure.

“Then in mid-November I got an email from coach (Greg) Beals at Ohio State. He had seen me throw a shutout when I was playing 16U and followed me. He kept me on his radar going through rehab. I went on a visit there and loved it, loved it.”

It has the second-rated uncommitted senior left-handed pitcher in Ohio anxious to find out where he fits in at the next level once back to full health.
