Every Monday during the high school season, we will preview a handful of the top games in our coverage area scheduled for the upcoming week (Monday - Sunday).
Halifax County v Bassett, Tuesday March 28
This game could be a showdown of one of the top bats in the 2017 class against one of the top arms. Bassett catcher Nathan Perry (High Point) has been getting some buzz and he will likely get a few chances to hit against Halifax ace Andrew Abbott (Virginia).
Spotswood v Turner Ashby, Tuesday March 28
This game could be a showdown between Turner Ashby senior ace Justin Showalter (James Madison), who shut down Millbrook’s dangerous lineup last week, and Spotswood junior Daniel Ouderkirk, who is the top uncommitted player in the class of 2018.
Poquoson v Lafayette, Thursday March 30
Poquoson is coming off of a 3A State Tournament run in 2016 and enters the game at 2-1 overall with a deep team and a dominant win against 4A Jamestown. 4A Lafayette features a team built around senior catcher John Keane (Old Dominion) and sophomore two-way contributor Geo Rivera (Old Dominion). The Rams have also played Jamestown this spring, and were shut out in a loss.
Miller School v Highland, Saturday April 1
Two of the top teams in VISAA II will square off in a matchup that could be a replayed in the State Tournament. Expect to see Highland ace Josh Pittman (St. Bonaventure) take the mound against a Miller lineup that features Tanner Morris (Virginia), Adam Hackenberg (Clemson), Will Wagner (Liberty). Miller should also have junior Ethan Murray (Duke) lined up to pitch.
Greenbrier Christian v Covenant School, Saturday April 1
Another pair of top VISAA II teams square off as the two-time defending champs travel to Covenant to take on a deep roster featuring six seniors committed to play college baseball. The Gators have a loaded lineup with Erik Stock (Old Dominion), Don Goodes (VMI), and Nic Britt (Virginia) to take on a deep Covenant rotation featuring Jacob Haney (William & Mary), Will Moore (William & Mary), and Luke Burton (Davidson).
St. John’s College v Paul VI Catholic, Saturday April 1
The Cadets have won the WCAC three straight years and will take on a Panther team that is geared up to bring the Championship back to Virginia this spring. This game will feature 19 players currently committed to play baseball in college and the times these teams meet this spring will be among the largest collections of prep talent on the same field at one time.
