 GOSHEN - The number one unsigned senior left-handed pitcher in Ohio is not concerned about an unknown future in baseball.
“I’m not in any rush to make a decision,” Brett Dietrich said. The 6-1 180-pounder recently participated in the PBR Winter Unsigned Senior Showcase and was among the best in three categories - Most Projectable Arm, Best Fastball and Best 3-Pitch Mix. “I had 12 to 15 D-II and D-III schools contact me after that,” said the 98th-ranked 2019 in the state, who recently was also shown interest from Division I Akron. “I haven’t taken any visits yet, I’m just weighing out the bigger schools where the focus would be on academics or the smaller schools with the focus on baseball. “Most of the schools like my size and my arm speed,” Dietrich continued. “There’s also a lot of room to increase my velo if I use my legs better.” There is one more item the 15th-ranked left-hander in Ohio can provide. “With my academics I’d get some money there,” noted Dietrich, a future mathematics major in statistics or data analytics who carries a 4.0 GPA and scored a 36 on his ACT.. An outfielder when not on the mound as the ace of the Goshen High School pitching staff, Dietrich has dreamed about playing at the next level. “Since I was four or five years old I’ve loved playing baseball,” Dietrich said. “After my freshman year I quit basketball to focus on baseball and my sophomore year I picked up velocity. It was then I thought if I work hard at it I can get to the point of playing in college. “I’d love to play Division I,” continued Dietrich, who has talked with Liberty and Lipscomb via email about attending prospect camps. ”The Christian schools I like, Liberty and Lipscomb, I know I’m close to that level if I get my velocity up a little bit. Right now I’m holding out to see what interest I get there.” That is where more improvement is needed out of Dietrich. “I need to develop better control of my curve and change,” Dietrich said. “I also need to continue to get my velo up higher and be more consistent in the 87 range.” That is an area that Dietrich has made strides of late. |
