Uncommitted Spotlight - DJ Newman, SS/RHP, Archbold HS / Ohio Elite, 2022

Multi-Sport Athlete:

DJ is a three-sport standout for Archbold High School. The Class of 2022 prospect is a SS/RHP in baseball, the QB in football, and a guard in basketball. This fall, DJ led his Bluestreaks to an 8-1 record on the gridiron. Statistically, Newman was 101-151 passing, with 1,526 passing yards and a 14/5 TD/INT ration. That athletic Newman also ran the ball 89 times for 831 yards and another 10 touchdowns. DJ was first team all-League.

Scouting Reports Through The Years:

7/21/20
Hit: Smooth stroke from the right side. Does a nice job of creating balance through loading sequence. When he pulls the trigger he has a level path with natural whip.

Power: Low effort juice with easy gap abilities.

Offensive Projection: Multiple Roles.

Max BP Exit Velocity: 95mph.

Max BP Distance: 353ft.

Field: Rangy defender with fluidity to actions. Linear routes. Ball skills are on par for class.

Throw: Clean arm with easy jump.

Defensive Projection: Corner look to him.

7/21/20 
Scouting Notes: Two-way prospect who impressed on the mound. Live arm with a fastball/breaking ball combination that tunnel well. Fastball works downhill and breaking ball has sharp, 12/6 action. Up to 86mph for the second time in two weeks. High follow.

Fastball: 84-86mph.
Fastball Spin Rate: 2000-2103
Breaking Ball: 69-72mph.
Breaking Ball Spin Rate: 2272-2292
Pitchability: In the zone.

7/08/20
6-foot, 170-pound athletic, projectable body frame. Dual guy with athleticism and has present, projectable tools. On the mound he throws with regular effort to his delivery using a vertical leg lift landing in a straight line at foot strike finishing with his momentum carrying toward the plate. Has quick arm speed through a ¾ slot. Fastball was mostly true through the zone ranging from 82-86 mph. Curveball has an 11/5 shape with sharpness to it and signs of late bite at 70-72 mph. From the infield he shows athleticism in his footwork and the ability to cover good ground with range. Fields with softer hands out in front of his body and has enough arm strength to stay at the position, reaching a velocity of 80 mph. Right-handed hitter with quick hands and some strength to his swing. Starts from a tall stance swinging with a mostly level bat path through the zone. Showed the ability to hit the ball to all parts of the field during his round of BP while registering an exit velocity of 96 mph. Ran a 6.91 60-yard dash.
 

 

7/18/19 - Positional
Body Type:
5-foot-10, 155-pound thin/athletic frame.
Swing Mechanics:
Simple and smooth load that engages his hands well.
Hit:
Level bat path that swings with intent and produces backspin pull side.
Power:
Easy juice to the pull side.
Offensive Projection:
Middle of the lineup guy.
Field:
Plays with active feet in the infield. Ball skills are on par for his class.
Throw:
Over the top arm slot with good carry on his throws. Throws with intent and has good arm strength.
Defensive Projection:
MIF.

7/18/19 - Pitching
Body Type:
5-foot-10, 155-pound thin/athletic frame.
Delivery/Mechanics:
Very athletic and fluid delivery that stays connected and on time all the way down the mound.
Fastball:
Throws with intent, and has a very loose arm complimented with a consistent release point. Ranges from 78-80mph.
Curveball:  Flashed an above average curveball at times. Chance to be a swing and miss pitch as it develops. Ranges from 66-68mph.
Pitchability:
In the zone most of the time.
