Two-Way Prospect Gongora A 'High Follow'

DAYTON - Moving from Arizona to Ohio in August of 2017 has proven to be a positive for Sebastian Gongora.

“My dad’s side of the family is out there in Arizona, but here is where my mom grew up,” explained the Chaminade-Julienne junior. “She went to Alter and we wanted to move back to be closer to the family.”

But there were adjustments in the move.

“The thing I like better there is you can play baseball year ‘round,” Gongora pointed out. “Here I like the atmosphere. The C-J team really took me in and I’ve learned to really appreciate baseball in Ohio.”

The left-handed two-way prospect has more than fit in, helping lead the Eagles to a Division II state championship a year ago when Gongora drove in the game-winning runs in a 3-1 victory over Wapakoneta.

An impressive hitter, the 58th-ranked 2020 in Ohio can also get the job done on the mound where colleges are showing an interest.

“I’m open to playing first base or pitching, whatever a team wants me to do,” said Gongora, who has been talking with Miami and Wright State along with Oregon State thus far.

PBR Ohio Director of Scouting Jordan Chiero is enamored with the 6-4 185-pounder, who at the recent Miami Valley Prospects Scout Day had the Most Projectable Arm, Best Fastball, Best change and Best 3-Pitch Mix.

“He’s one of the guys I’m most excited to see at the Top Prospect Games against high-level competition because he really looks the part in a showcase setting,” Chiero said. “He’s a lefty/lefty guy with length at 6-4. His fastball is up to 84 with easy juice at the plate. He’s a high follow who would be a D-iI follow on the mound and at the plate.”
