TOP PERFORMERS FROM THE UNSIGNED SENIOR SHOWCASE
1. Kyle Burson, RHP/IF, Brunswick HS
The 6-foot-1, 160-pound two-way prospect is intriguing to say the least. At this point, it is difficult to project his position at the next level, but he shows the hands, athleticism, and quick arm action to play on the left side of the infield. At the plate, he starts with a slightly open setup and tall stance. Uses short stride and good balance. Shows quick bat speed as the ball jumps off his bat. After watching his actions and arm strength (82 mph ... he was 84 mph the day before at another camp) across the infield, we were excited to see him on the mound. He only showed an 80-82 mph fastball, but he surely projects to add velocity as physically develops and learns to speed up his delivery (tends to have a slight pause at the top of his leg kick). Tends to show his breaking ball (67-70 mph) by cuffing it, but it still shows 11/5 break. Changeup (69-70 mph) shows some fade.
2. Ronald Hall, OF/LHP, Princeton HS
5-foot-11, 180-pound two-way prospect that committed to Sinclair CC shortly after the event. Registered a 7.18 60-yard dash. Reached a top velocity of 83 mph from the outfield with some carry on his throws. At the plate, the left-handed takes a slight uphill path to his swing. Still needs to work on better incorporating his lower half. Line drive type production. At the plate, the southpaw shows an 80-84 mph with some cut. His breaking ball sits 70-73 mph and his changeup shows some fade at 72-74 mph.
3. Nicholas Munger, RHP/OF, Perrysburg HS
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect looks the part of an outside linebacker, but doesn't show that sort of stiffness in his actions. Likely projects best on the mound. He hides the ball well from a high 3/4 arm slot and generates an 80-82 mph fastball with run to it. More importantly, he shows excellent command of a 70-72 mph change up that is thrown near arm speed and shows excellent fading action. His curveball is soft (64 mph), but it has good 12/6 break and he locates it well. In addition to his skills on the mound, Munger shows the ability to play a corner outfield spot at the next level. Offensively, he uses a shoulder level rigger. Takes short, slight uphill path to the ball. Shows a tendency to dive at the ball, which needs to be corrected for consistency.
4. Christian Chiero, 3B/RHP, Gahanna Lincoln HS
In the field, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound two-way prospect is best suited at third base or at second base. He shows good actions with fluid footwork and some quickness to his transfer. He reached a top velocity of 81 mph across the infield. At the plate, he shows the ability to swing the bat with a slight uphill path to the ball and some good pop in his bat. Registered a 7.23 60-yard dash. Most surprisingly, Chiero may have looked strongest on the mound. His fastball sat 82-84 mph, but mostly hung around the 84 mark. He uses a quick tempo and gets good torque out of his body. His breaking ball shows sharp 12/6 break at 69-70 mph, but it needs to develop more depth.
5. William Keller, RHP, Chaminade-Julienne HS
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect passes the look test with a tall, solid frame. He uses a quick tempo and the arm works well. He sat 82-84 mph with his fastball and showed a 72-74 mph breaking ball with 11/5 action to it. His changeup is a work in progress. Tends to be erratic and out of the zone at 77-79 mph. It won't be a surprise to see a jump in velocity over the next couple of years with his size and the quickness of his arm.
6. Corbon Angermeir, RHP, NDCL HS
6-foot-4, 205-pound right-handed pitching prospect. Made his second appearance at a PBR Ohio Unsigned Senior Showcase. The 6-foot-5, lanky pitcher continues to be an interesting prospect. Over the past year, he has learned how to use his long, lanky body. And as a result, his velocity has taken a 5-7 mph jump. Over the past six months, he has shown an 82-85 mph fastball on two occasions. The arm action isn't squeaky clean and the secondary stuff still needs development, but he could be a rewarding project for a college program. His curveball sits at 69-70 mph and tends to be flat. Changeup is straight at 75 mph.
7. Gerald Salisbury, LHP, Brunswick HS
One of the hot names left on the recruiting boards. The 6-foot, 175-pound left-handed pitcher put up strong numbers last spring for Brunswick. On this occasion, his fastball sat in the low 80's. He shows some deception in his delivery as he releases from a high 3/4 arm slot. Overall, he shows clean mechanics, but he needs to show more consistent command and movement out of his breaking ball (65-66 mph) and change up (68-69 mph). He figures to be one of the top left-handed pitchers left on the board come this spring.
KEEP AN EYE ON …
Benjamin Pritchett, OF/RHP, Fishers HS (IN)
6-foot-2, 185-pound prospect with long, athletic frame. Registered a 7.56 60-yard dash (ran with tweaked hamstring). His body fits the profile. Uses short arm action through an over the top slot. His throws show some good carry and reached a top velocity of 83 mph. Uses a clean exchange, but has a tendency to get long. At the plate, he starts with a wide, balanced stance. Displays quick bat speed and pull power at the plate. Overall fluid rhythm to his swing.
Brock Frentzel, 1B/OF, Gahanna Lincoln HS
6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect with big, physical frame. Registered a 7.45 60-yard dash. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph from the outfield and 77 mph from first base. More natural at first base. Shows quick arm action and transfer. Offensively, he starts with a wide stance and slight crouch. Uses a short stride and explosive lower half. Shows pull tendencies in his swing. Quick hands and an uphill path to the ball.
Cory Blessing, RHP, Mayfield HS
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed pitching prospect with tall, athletic build. Uses high ¾ arm slot with above average arm speed. Uses an 81-84 mph fastball with arm side run. Curveball shows soft, gradual 11/5 movement at 67-69 mph. Tends to slow down his arm speed with his changeup, which sits at 67-69 mph and shows some fade.
David Hare II, OF/1B, Kings HS
6-foot-2, 175-pound prospect with athletic build. Registered a 7.35 60-yard dash. Recovering from Tommy John surgery still, so he didn’t throw on this occasion. Previously showed top velocity of 82 mph. Projects as a corner outfielder or first baseman at the next level. Switch hitting prospect. More natural from the right side. Shows balance in his swing with good use of his lower half. Shows progress in his work from the left side. Interesting follow this spring for schools still looking for versatile prospect with good bat.
Derrick Stephenson, RHP, Midview HS
5-foot-11, 175-pound pitching prospect with a solid, athletic build. Still recovering from Tommy John surgery. Shows quickness in his arm and some effort in his delivery. Fastball has some late life. Velocity sat 79-82 mph on this occasion, but he was 82-84 mph in December. Changeup shows similar movement as his fastball at 66-68 mph. Didn’t throw breaking balls due to recovery plan.
Michael Hudec, IF, North Royalton HS
6-foot, 180-pound prospect with athletic build. Registered a 7.16 60-yard dash. He isn’t going to “wow” you in a workout, but presents overall solid skill set and good sense of the game. Displays fluid actions in the infield that translate to third base or an offensive second baseman. Good balance and ability to throw from all angles. Makes up for arm strength (73 mph) with quick release and transfer. At the plate, he starts in a tall, balanced stance. Displays rotational mechanics in his swing. Will improve power by better incorporating his lower half. Shows line drive type production.
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed pitcher with solid frame. Shows quick arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Doesn’t show much of an inward turn or maximizing torque in his delivery. Still more velocity to come with improvements in this area. Fastball registered 82-83 mph. Curveball is gradual and soft with 11/5 break at 69-72 mph. Changeup is fairly straight and sits at 72-73 mph.
6-foot-3, 200-pound southpaw with tall, athletic build. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sits at 79-81 mph with some cut to it. Curveball shows 1/7 break at 65-66 mph and changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and straight at 67-68 mph. Currently playing basketball, so not in top baseball shape. Raw skills at present, but shows projectable athleticism and arm action. Needs to correct some directional issues in his delivery. Also tends to collapse on back leg.
Seth Bryant, C, Sandusky Perkins HS
6-foot, 205-pound catching prospect with solid, athletic build. Showed good catch and receive skills behind the plate. His pop times sat 2.10-2.20, but his actions were consistent quick and compact and he displayed good accuracy as a result of it. In addition, he showed good arm strength with a top velocity of 76 mph. At the plate, he displays a fluid rhythm to his swing with pull power.
5-foot-11, 185-pound catching prospect with solid build and above average skills. Registered a 7.76 60-yard dash. Showed pop times between 2.05-2.18 and a top velocity of 79 mph on his throws. Offensively, Frye displayed strong hands and a slight uphill path to the ball. He will only enhance his power by better incorporating his lower half.
