TOP CLASS OF 2013 PROSPECTS FROM THE FALL TOP PROSPECT SHOWCASE
Steven Calhoun, LHP, Tippecanoe HS
6-foot-7, 210-pound southpaw with big imposing body. Has moderate arm speed through 3/4 slot with long backside arm extension. Fastball ranges 81-83 mph (topped 85 mph at a September showcase) with some late action. Shows spin on slurvy action curveball ranging 69-73 mph. Has good arm action on change (70-71 mph). Also showed knuckle ball with a little action (74 mph).
Mitch McNabb, RHP/IF, Bishop Ready HS
6-foot, 168-pound right-handed prospect. Potential two-shot player, but projects best as a pitcher. Good delivery with quick arm speed through upper 3/4 slot. Fastball ranges 83-84 mph with some run action. Has feel for downward spin curveball (71-72 mph) and run action on changeup (73-74 mph). Registered 7.27 60-yard dash with 77 mph arm from all angles. Good infield skills. Hits with open stance with crouch. Uses low hand set in trigger with upper cut. Has one hand swing finish.
Ryan Smith, IF, Midview HS
6-foot-1, 165-pound prospect. Player with physical projection in his body. Shows solid raw skills. Ran 7.28 60-yard dash with 81 mph arm strength across the diamond. Grades well on fielding skills with hands, feet and balance. Basically upper body type hitter with low hand trigger. Has one hand swing finish and needs to enhance lower body torque.
Derek Hendrixson, RHP/IF, Centerville HS
5-foot-9, 152-pound two-way prospect. High motor type player. Offers two-way potential. Solid infield skills with hands, feet and arm strength 79 mph) from all angles. Ran 7.43 60-yard dash. Has chest level hand trigger offensively. Squares barrel on bat well with some controlled upper cut. Has good hand finish but needs improved lower half. On the hill, quick arm from upper 3/4 slot. Fastball ranged 79-81 mph (topped at 85 in early summer). Has downward tilt curve (72-73 mph) and arm side run & sink on change (69-71 mph).
Hunter Crates, OF, Granville HS
5-foot-9, 155-pound left-handed hitting and throwing outfielder. Smallish player with good raw skills. Ran 7.13 60-yard dash with solid arm (80 mph). Showed balance in outfield skills. Makes good contact as a hitter with chest level hand trigger. Quick into zone with long finish. Needs to consistently clear front side hip and improve hand swing finish.
Tate Stewart, IF, Granville HS
6-foot, 185-pound infield prospect. Shows strength with athletic actions. Ran 7.16 60-yard dash with 73 mph arm strength from all angles. Graded well defensively with hands, feet and balance. Shows power potential as a hitter. Has open upright stance with shoulder level hand trigger. Needs to improve squaring front side towards pitcher, creating more plate coverage.
