Sulek Is More Than A Standout With The Glove

MASON - Anthony Sulek is confident about what he can bring to a college baseball program.

“I’ll be the hardest worker on the field,” explained Sulek, who carries a 4.1 GPA at Mason High School. “I hustle on the field, my body language is always positive and I’ll bring intensity to the team.”

Interest in the seventh-rated junior shortstop in Ohio heated up after the Future Games.

“I went to some PBR events, one at Ohio State, which gave me the opportunity to showcase my skills,” Sulek reflected. “That led to the Future Games where I competed with the best players in the country. After the Future Games I went to a camp at Ohio U and after that more schools became interested, Miami and Toledo. Then Northern Kentucky and more recently Bowling Green.”

But with no commitment on the horizon, the 16-year-old admits to being a bit frustrated.

“It’s pretty stressful when the process is slow,” Sulek said. “It takes time. I just have to wait for it to come to me.”

Yet, there is a belief that the second-ranked uncommitted 2024 shortstop in the state is being overlooked.

“I do think colleges are missing something,” Sulek pointed out. “They look at my glove as my main tool but are missing what I can do at the plate. My swing can compete with any pitch thrown at me and I can execute in any situation that’s given to me.

“I was expecting more interest,” Sulek continued. “But I’m not disappointed. There’s a future ahead of me.”

Improvement is part of what the 5-10 165-pounder hopes draws more attention in the coming months.

“The big thing with me that has changed is confidence,” Sulek said. “Going to those PBR events has brought it up. I’ve also improved at the plate. I’ve been able to bring a lot this summer. I’ve gotten a lot of advice with my swing and become a better hitter.  I’m at a much better place.”

Jordan Chiero, PBR Ohio Director of Scouting, has been impressed with what he has seen out of the 46th-ranked junior in the state.

“I could watch Sulek take ground balls all day,” Chiero explained. “He’s a premier defender with elite ball skills and some of the quickest feet in his class. The bat continues to trend positively each time we see him. Before it’s all said and done, you’re looking at a slam dunk middle of the infield defender at the next level who can set the table offensively.”

It was his travel coach with CBC that enlightened Sulek about his possibilities at the next level.

“At the beginning of this past summer my coach reached out to me knowing I have potential to play in college,” Sulek related. “That’s when I realized what I could do. After that I started going to showcases, specifically at Ohio State, and I got a lot from that. Jordan had some good comments, I stepped up with videos and that’s when things started taking off.”

The 13th-rated uncommitted 2024 in Ohio knows what he is looking for in a college.

“Number one is academics,” Sulek said. “I want to do something in the medical field, but baseball is still a goal. The biggest thing for me is how do I like the school if I’m not playing baseball. That’s the main thing. I want to be able to enjoy a school if I’m not playing baseball there.”

The Mason junior is looking forward to what lies ahead in making a college decision.

“The biggest thing right now is high school ball,” Sulek said. “I have one showcase before, then hopefully winning a state championship. I think my recruitment will pick up once they realize how good our team is. We have a lot of Power 5 guys that can draw scouts to our games.”
