Q and A with 2013 Ohio State Commit: JP Sorma (Independence HS)

JP Sorma, INF, Independence HS, Class of 2013

PBR: Why did you choose OSU?

Sorma: I have always wanted to be a Buckeye for as long as I can remember. OSU is a great school with an awesome reputation around the country and world for its athletics and academics.  I have friends and family who attend OSU and who are alumni.  I love what being a Buckeye stands for.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Sorma: Many schools were a consideration. I was interested in Kent State, West Virginia, Central Michigan, Ohio University, Wright State, Ball State to name a few.

PBR: Where did Coach Beals first see you?  How did your relationship develop with him?

Sorma: Coach Beals first saw me at a camp at OSU. He noticed me in the batting cages and we kept in touch through emails, phone calls and eventually I visited the campus.

PBR: You have made your commitment very early.  Why did you chose to make your decision so soon and are you finished with the recruiting process?

Sorma: I always knew that I wanted to be a Buckeye as I said before but after my last visit, I found everything that I was looking for and knew that OSU was the school for me.  Coach Beals, Coach Holick and the staff just can't be beat. There is great value in being a Buckeye and I was able to realize that without looking back or with hesitation.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Sorma: they expect me to "get after it" and work hard to be the best player and student I can be. My fate on the field depends on me.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Sorma: Wow, that is a tough question. I really do not have a single person because so many people in my life have equally impacted me. From my baseball coaches over the years, Mark Echstenkamper,  Bill Martin, Phil Glazer, Eddie Konopka and especially Dan Smego who has been coaching me for almost a decade, my parents and of course, the OSU coaches.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher that you have faced in Ohio?

Sorma: Kent State commit, Eric Lauer for sure.
