Previously, we release the complete statistical analysis from the 2013 Top Prospect Games.
Adam Wroblewski, LHP, Edison HS, 2014
6-foot-2, 215-pound southpaw with solid build. Throws from behind his ear through a low ¾ to ¾ slot. Uses short arm action with average arm speed. Requires regular effort in his delivery. Fastball sits 82-83 mph with some run. Breaking ball shows slurvy type action 74-75 mph. Also uses a 74-75 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed.
Alec Turner, 1B/3B , Carlisle HS, 2014
5-foot-10, 180-pound corner infield prospect has improved his athleticism since the winter. Registered a 7.5 60-yard dash. His best tool is his bat. Starts with an open stance. Uses smooth load with uphill path to the ball. Shows power potential in his swing with pull tendencies. Registered 88 mph exit velocity off the tee. In the field, he reached 82 mph across the infield with short arm action. His feet work at third base, but needs to improve lateral quickness.
BJ Donathan, C, Tippecanoe HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 175-pound catcher with solid, athletic build. Registered a 7.54 60-yard dash. Registered 1.98-2.06 pop times with accurate throws on the bag. Shows quickness in his hands and transfer. Reached a top velocity of 73 mph from the crouch. At the plate, the right-handed hitter shows a balanced setup. Line drive type bat with pull tendencies in his swing. Uses a short stride and short path to the ball.
Blake Jenkins, OF/LHP, Walsh Jesuit HS, 2015
6-foot-3, 180-pound two-way prospect. Shows the most promise as a position player, but with size and arm strength, he still has plenty of time to make improvements on the mound. Registered a 6.7 60-yard dash. Showed long arm action through over the top slot while reaching a top velocity of 88 mph. Likely projects as a right field type at the next level. At the plate, he shows balance with a smooth load from the right side. Tendency to wrap his bat during his load, which creates some drag. Takes a level path to the ball. Off the tee, he showed an exit velocity of 93 mph. On the mound, he shows a slow tempo. Doesn’t maximize the use of his lower half and create torque. Fastball sat 77-80 mph in comparison to his arm strength from the outfield. Used a 65 mph breaking ball. Needs to learn how to carry over athleticism from the field onto the mound.
Bradley Hamilton, C, Avon Lake, 2014
6-foot-3, 197-pound catcher with big, physical frame. Registered a 7.37 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he reached a top velocity of 76 mph from the crouch. Showed good footwork, but tends to get too wide of a setup in games, which effects receiving. Pop times ranged between 2.01-2.09. Threw out runners in game play. Shows quick hands in his transfer. At the plate, the right-handed hitter uses a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. Shows quick bat speed (88 mph exit velocity off the tee) and power in his swing.
Darrien Knowles, OF/LHP, St. Edward HS, 2015
6-foot-2, 170-pound prospect with thin, lanky build and room to fill out. Interesting prospect to follow as he gets physically stronger. At present, it is difficult to project his position at the next level as increased strength will play a big role. Registered a 7.07 60-yard dash. In the field, he uses long arm action. Tends to throw uphill. Ball has movement, which causes some accuracy issues. At the plate, the left-handed hitter shows a balanced setup. Has extra hand movement in load, which interferes with hands being in the right spot at foot contact. Still shows some quickness in his hands (80 mph exit velocity off the tee). Takes slight uphill path to the ball. On the mound, the lefty uses a funky delivery with a choppy rhythm. Current velocity isn’t over whelming at 75-77 mph, but he has some serious run to his ball. Hitters struggled to square him up. Breaking ball sits at 62-63 mph with slurvy type action and his changeup shows similar movement to his fastball at 73 mph.
Edmond Pilollo, IF/RHP, Canfield HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect. Registered a 6.59 60-yard dash. Likely projects as a second baseman or third baseman at the next level. Uses short arm action with over the top arm slot. Reached top velocity of 72 mph across the infield. His feet work, but doesn’t show exceptional quickness. Will improve as he quickness his transfer. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts with an open stance. Uses a short stride. Showed some quickness in his hands (81 mph exit velocity) and good use of the whole field. On the mound, he sat 81-83 with his short arm action through an over the top slot. While he showed some deception as his delivery allows him to hide the ball, his fastball showed straight movement. Delivery showed regular effort. His breaking ball sat at 70-71 mph. He shows a tendency to slow down his arm speed. And his changeup registered at 77-78 mph.
Eric Heffner, OF, Lima Bath, 2014
5-foot-11, 170-pound outfielder with small, athletic build. Registered a 6.99 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action and high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 69 mph on his throws. Needs to improve footwork and quickness of his exchange. At the plate, he starts with a balanced setup. Shows minimal load. Needs to better incorporate his lower half and loosen up his top-half as he gets a bit stiff.
Greg Johnson, OF, Troy HS, 2014
6-foot-2, 170-pound outfielder with tall, athletic build. Registered 7.00 60-yard dash. Uses short arm action through high ¾ arm slot. Needs to continue improving arm strength (70 mph) and continue improving his footwork. At the plate, the left-handed hitter starts in a wide stance with a crouch setup. Tends to bar his arm in his load. Uses a short stride with long path to the ball. Showed occasional pop in his bat.
Jake Vance, RHP/IF, Canton Central Catholic, 2016
6-foot-1, 170-pound prospect with long, lanky frame that projects best as a pitcher at this stage. Shows quick arm speed through a high ¾ arm slot with long arm action. Delivery is clean and requires little effort. Shows good feel for three pitches. Fastball sat 81-83 mph with good arm side run. His curveball sat 68-70 mph with late, 11/5 break. His changeup shows similar run to his fastball at 69-70 mph but he has a tendency to slow down his arm action. In the field, he projects best as a corner infielder. Uses short arm action (78 mph). Needs to keep improving glove work and footwork at this stage. At the plate, he shows length in his swing from both sides. Tendency to get long and create bat drag as bat wraps in his load and hands get away from his body.
Jeremy Randolph, RHP/IF, Miamisburg HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect with average, athletic build. Projects best on the mound for the next level. Uses quick arm speed through high ¾ arm slot. Fastball sat 83-86 mph with occasional run. Displays a 76 mph slider and a 76-77 mph changeup. Registered a 7.57 60-yard dash. Needs to continue improving footwork as he has a tendency to get flat. Shows some softness in his hands. Reached a top velocity of 79 mph on his throws across the infield. At the plate, he starts with a tall setup and smooth load. Shows some rhythm to his swing. Reached a top exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee. Squared the ball up with line drive type production.
Joshua Schaffer, RHP, Grove City HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 155-pound righty with thin build. Uses high ¾ arm slot with slow tempo to his delivery. Fastball sat 78-81 mph with little movement. Showed good command of a 61-62 mph breaking ball with gradual 12/6 movement. Maintained his arm speed with the pitch. Also throws a 73 mph changeup near fastball arm speed with occasional arm side fade.
Michael Barnabei, LHP/OF, Pickerington Central, 2014
5-foot-11, 170-pound two-way prospect. Shows most promise as a pitcher. Uses an 80-82 mph fastball with some sink to it from the left side. Velocity should increase with better use of his lower half. His best off-speed pitch is a 70-72 mph changeup thrown near fastball arm speed with good fade. Also displayed a 67-68 mph breaking ball with 1/7 break. In the infield, he uses short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Reached a top velocity of 75 mph on his throws from the outfield. Showed good footwork and played through the ball. At the plate, he uses a wide stance. Upper body shows some stiffness to it. Contact type hitter at this stage.
Sam Vilk, 1B, Mentor HS, 2014
6-foot-4, 225-pound power hitting first baseman. Big, physical prospect. Swings it from the left side. Shows balance at the plate with an explosive lower half. Shows quick bat speed (88 mph off the tee) and an uphill path to the ball. Definite pull power, but showed the ability to use the left side of the field. Moves well around first base. Quick exchange on throws to second base. Draws comparisons to University of Cincinnati first baseman Jeff Murray.
Taren Sullivan, RHP, Lima Bath, 2014
Long, lanky prospect with plenty of upside. The 6-foot-6, 183-pound righty throws with long arm action through a ¾ slot. Showed an 83-87 mph fastball that reached up to 88 mph. His ball shows some sink to the arm side. Delivery doesn’t require much effort. Should add velocity as he cleans up mechanics and adds strength. Relies on a 70-72 mph breaking ball with 10/4 action. Tends to slow down his arm action with the pitch. Intriguing prospect who is also a basketball recruit.
Ty Shoaff, LHP, Walsh Jesuit HS, 2015
6-foot-1, 210-pound southpaw with solid frame. Uses high ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed and long arm action. Shows smooth rhythm to his delivery. Fastball sat at 81-84 mph with some run to it. Located the pitch well on both sides of the plate. Breaking ball sat 69-72 mph with 1/7 break down into the zone. Tendency to hang the pitch. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed at 73-74 mph.
Tyler Cowles, OF, Grove City HS, 2014
5-foot-11, 185-pound outfielder with athletic build. Reached a top velocity of 78 mph from the outfield. Shows short arm action and throws uphill. In the field, he uses a balance setup with a smooth load. Takes a short stride and shows some quickness into the zone. Contact type hitter with line drive production. Good, repeatable rhythm to his swing.
Will Haueter, C, North Canton Hoover, 2014
6-foot-2, 195-pound catcher with big, solid frame. Registered a 7.42 60-yard dash. Behind the plate, he showed a top velocity of 75 mph from the crouch. Pop times ranged 2.04-2.11. Throws were accurate and on the bag. Footwork gets long at times. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a tall setup. Relies on his upper body and quick hands (91 mph exit velocity off the tee). Doesn’t consistently clear the front side with his swing. Will only get better with complete use of his lower half.
Zac Carey, OF, London HS, 2014
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed pitcher with lanky, athletic build. Projects best as a pitcher at the next level. Uses a ¾ to high ¾ arm slot with quick arm speed and long arm action. Delivery requires regular effort. Fastball sat 84-87 mph with some run. Uses a hard 72-75 mph breaking ball with 10/4 movement. Also showed a 74-75 mph changeup that is thrown near fastball arm speed, but didn’t show much movement. In the infield, he shows the athleticism to play the infield or outfield. Registered a 6.79 60-yard dash. Showed 79 mph arm strength across the infield. Doesn’t show consistent, fluid actions. Tendency to get flat. His athleticism and arm strength may be better suited for the outfield long term. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts with a tall set up. Needs to maintain balance throughout his swing. Bat path has a tendency to get long, but he still shows strength in his swing
Zachary Kendall, RHP, Troy HS, 2014
6-foot-2, 140-pound righty with thin, lanky build. Looks young with plenty of maturity to come. Throws through high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed. Shows regular effort to his delivery. Consistently located his fastball down in the zone at 81-83 mph with sink. Breaking ball sat at 68 mph while changeup stayed between 71-74 mph. Should add velocity as he gets stronger and puts on weight.
Zach Willeman, RHP, Napoleon HS, 2014
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher with athletic build. Throws with quick arm speed and short arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Fastball jumped out of his hand at 86-88 mph with some run to it. Delivery doesn’t require much effort. Relies on 76-78 mph breaking ball with late 12/6 action. With Ohio’s class of 2014 thin on top end arms, he has emerged as one of the top available pitcher’s in his class.
