PBR Spotlight Game: Maumee at No. 11 Millbury Lake

Millbury, OH - With numerous scouts on hand, Millbury Lake ace Jayce Vancena (Michigan commit, ranked number 3 in Ohio and overall 13 in the 2014 class, pictured right) toed the rubber and delivered a solid performance on the hill as well as at the plate. The Flyers (No. 11 Division III) defeated Maumee (2-1) by a final of 5-1.
Maumee got on the board first in the fourth inning as unsigned senior Jason Burkett (ranked number 193 in 2014 class) drew a leadoff walk. Sophomore Austin Calopietro laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Burkett to second, later scoring on an RBI single from junior Scott Simon.
With Lake down 1-0 in the fifth inning, senior seven-hole first basemen Anthony Pratt blasted a leadoff home run over the scoreboard in left. After a strikeout from Maumee junior starter John Brady, a walk and error, senior Cody Witt ripped an RBI single to put the Flyers on top 2-1. Vancena came to the plate with two on, and after singling in his first at bat and doubling in his second at bat, the cleanup hitter ripped a two-run single to lefter past the glove of Burkett at short.
The Flyers (5-1) added an insurance run in the sixth as senior Joel Densic drove in senior Nick Walsh to put Lake up 5-1.
Vancena came out after Lake added the insurance run. The big righty went six innings allowing one run on five hits and one walk while striking out seven. Junior Connor Bowen came in to shut Maumee down in the seventh one-two-three with one strike out.
