Miami University- While the game looked promising on paper, Ohio’s No.1 ranked team, Cincinnati Moeller (3-0) made short work of Michigan’s Grosse Pointe South HS. The game was called after five innings.
Grosse Pointe HS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. With one out Ben Williams was hit by a pitch by Moeller junior right-handed pitcher Gus Ragland. Carmen Benedetti (Michigan recruit) followed with a double to left center. First baseman George Fishback (Kalamazoo recruit) plated two with a two-out double to right field. Ragland struck out the next batter to end the threat, and Grosse Pointe wouldn’t score again.
Moeller took advantage of Grosse Pointe pitcher Carmen Benedetti’s five walks and two HBPs to score ten runs in the bottom of the first with the big hits coming from shortstop Riley Mahan (Kentucky recruit), who had a single with 2 RBIs; DH Cameron Whitehead (Furman recruit), who hit a base clearing double; and second baseman Max Foley, who had collected two RBIs after a double.
Moeller added seven runs in the second inning with the big hits coming from Mahan, Whitehead, and senior outfielder Nick Meece, who all collected two RBIs apiece.
Moeller pitcher Gus Ragland got the win with three innings of work. He showed effective use of three pitches on and around the plate. He struck out five while walking only one.
Unsigned senior Mason Eckley pitched two shut-out innings.
Grosse Pointe catcher Ben Williams was a “proverbial wall” for five innings stopping 98% of all balls thrown by five pitchers.
Moeller (3-0) travels to Tennessee this week for their annual spring break trip while Grosse Pointe played Oak Hills this afternoon.
