LIMA, OHIO – The Shawnee Indians' Cory Wilder strikes out nine in a 3-2 victory over the Bath Wildcats.
Bath HS was able to knotch the scoreboard first when Colin Gassard came around the bases to score on a pass ball during the top of the 2nd. Right after Bath scored, Wilder settled in overpowering the next two hitters, striking them out on 92 and 93mph fastballs.
Bath's coaches knew runs would be scarce, so playing small ball was the Wildcats strategy.
Wildcats' southpaw Eric Jordan effectivley mixed his pitches keeping many Shawnee hitters off the bases. More importantly, he held the Bath lead at 1-0 going into the 6th inning.
In the top of the 6th, Bath went back to work when Junior Eric Heffner hit a single up the middle. Sticking to their small ball strategy, they bunted Heffner into scoring position. After a wild pitch and a pass ball, Heffner came across the plate stretching the lead to 2-0. With the Shawnee bats being cold, it was looking as if Bath could grab the win.
With one out in the bottom of the 6th, the Shawnee bats found some life. Left Fielder Zack Peake and Shortstop Tyler Anderson both stroked singles putting the tieing run at first base. A double and the game would likely be tied. Zach Bailey didn't hit a double, instead he stepped up and drove the ball over the left field fence giving the Indians a one run lead.
With a 3-2 lead, Wilder trotted back out to the mound attempting a complete game victory. Cory showed why he is a future NC State commit striking out all three hitters with ease, and getting Shawnee HS the win.
