HUDSON – In a game between Division II St. Vincent St. Mary and Western Reserve Academy – the Irish came away victorious over the Pioneers 11-1.
The Pioneers scored first, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning on a Patrick Mylott (2015 – C) RBI single. Mylott knocked in Jack McKenzie (2014 – SS) who reached first on a walk and later stole second. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, this would be their only offense of the night.
Patrick’s twin brother, Joseph (2015 – 1B/P), the Pioneer starting pitcher, held the Irish bats in check for the first two innings. The Irish finally got something going in the top of the third J. Mylott began to struggle with his command walking two batters and hitting two more. With the bases loaded, the Irish were ready to breakthrough. However, the Mylott brothers got the Pioneers out of a jam by spoiling an attempted suicide squeeze by Irish batter Zac George (2014 – C – an Ohio Northern recruit). George laid a bunt down the first base line. J.Mylott made an athletic play fielding the ball, flipping it to his brother P.Mylott for the second out, and the impressive defensive catcher threw to first to end the inning allowing the Irish to only score one run.
The Irish bats would not stay quiet for long. They exploded for 10 runs over the final four innings. The offense was sparked by a Vinny Carson (2014 – OF) single scoring two runs in the 6th inning; and a Calvin Miller (2014 – 3B/SS – a Wooster recruit) double scoring two more runs in the 7th. The Irish bats displayed excellent patience at the plate as they earned 11 free passes.
The 11 runs were plenty for Brian Horning (2015 – P). Horning, a left handed pitcher, settled in very nicely after first inning struggles. He retired the Pioneers in order during the second, third and fourth innings. Horning allowed one hit while striking out four batters en route to his first victory of the season.
St. Vincent St. Mary improves to 3-3 on the season and they host the Copley Indians on Friday. Western Reserve Academy falls to 4-2 on the season and they host Northwest in a double header on Saturday.
