Ohio Insider: Top Underclass Uncommitted Sleeper Prospects
With the Summer season coming to an end and the 2016-2017 high school sports season as well as fall ball getting underway, we would like to take a look at some of the top uncommitted prospects at each position. Over the past month we looked at the top 2017 prospects and as you can see by our 2017 Player Rankings there are numerous talented prospects available.
Today we are looking at the top uncommitted underclass Sleeper Prospects in Ohio. We will look to create a few top uncommitted lists each week and as you can see by our 2018 and 2019 Player Rankings, there are numerous talented prospects available.
Class of 2018
Seth Gergely, OF/LHP, Tallmadge, 2018
Ranked: 51st in Ohio’s 2018 class
Scouting Report: 6-foot-2, 160-pound thin, projectable frame. Talented two-way prospect. On the mound the southpaw has long, loose arm action with a fastball that is anywhere from 74-78 with slight run. Expect velocity to increase with maturity and as he learns to incorporate more of his lower half. Curveball was sharp when down in the zone but left it up at times. A smooth swinging lefty that uses a double tap for timing and weight shift. Bat gets through the zone on a level path with obvious bat speed. Very efficient mechanically. Ball got of his well in batting practice and he showed the ability to use the whole field. Reached a top exit velocity of 83 mph and ran a 4.25 from home to first. In the outfield he had fluidity to his footwork and confidence in his glove. Showed off above average arm strength to home plate with good carry. A definite prospect to follow as he matures physically and fills out his frame.
College Outlook: Earned a spot on the “Sleeper” list because the only tools he is missing is strength. He is functionally athletic/efficient mechanically both on the mound and at the plate, which would indicate maturity and added strength would translate to performance. Where he fits best at the next level will be determined by how he matures physically. As of now he is more advanced as a position player, but a future as a two-way guy is far from out of the question.
