MEDINA - The ability to learn is a trait often overlooked.

Jake Johnson feels that characteristic has been helpful in his quest to play college baseball.

“I’m a really great learner,” noted the top-ranked uncommitted junior in Ohio. “I’m learning how to throw better and how to make myself better. That’s a big part of my game. I’m able to learn and teach myself stuff which brings a different connection to my game. A more personal emotion is brought into it.”

The desire to play at the next level came early, but the realization happened as a ninth-grader.

“Ever since I was eight-years-old I’ve wanted to play professional baseball and play college baseball,” explained the Medina 2021 standout. “Since I picked up the bat I’ve wanted to play at the highest level.

“When I was a freshman Hunter Havekost was a senior. He taught me to work hard and make the right decisions … the right way to go about stuff. It was then I realized I had a chance to make an impact at the next level.”

Schools have taken notice in the 25th-rated junior in the state, with Ohio State, Kent State and Cincinnati currently the top three schools Johnson is talking to the most.

“I’ve been lifting, eating better, gaining weight, staying healthy and running faster,” Johnson said of improvement made to help gain interest from colleges.

The prospect of pitching at the next level has added to the notoriety gained by the 5-11, 185-pound shortstop recruit.

“I started pitching at the age of seven or eight but I was never looked at as a pitcher,” Johnson reflected. “I’ve always been a hitter first.”
