Inside the Recruitment: '15 3B Shayne Erny commits to Marietta
December 8, 2014
Shayne Erny, 3B, St. Edwards, Class of 2015
PBR: Why did you choose Marietta?
Erny: Academically, Marietta was a great fit for me as they have strong sports management and athletic training programs. The campus is beautiful and the city is so supportive of the baseball players, there’s a great feel saying you’re a Marietta baseball player. As far as baseball is concerned, you can’t beat Marietta, the winning atmosphere is something I really wanted to become a part of. Coach Brewer puts pressure on his guys to compete and really brings the best out of his players which is something I love. Competing for a national championship is something I’ve always dreamed of and Marietta has proven every year that they will put themselves in a position to win.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Erny: It ultimately came down to Heidelberg and Marietta.
PBR: Where did Coach Brewer first see you? How did your relationship develop with the coaching staff?
Erny: Coach Brewer first saw me at his prospect camp in the fall, however, Coach Rosen was the first to notice me at a 17U Midwest Pelicans Tournament in the Akron area. Coach Rosen contacted me to come down and take a campus visit which is where I developed a great relationship with all the coaches.
PBR: Marietta is a Division III Powerhouse. How does it feel to be a part of such a great program and instantly be a national contender?
Erny: Becoming a part of this program is truly an honor, competing for a national championship every year is something that is very special to me and ultimately the deciding factor to be a Pioneer next year. Nothing can compare to being a national contender the second I step foot on campus.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Erny: I’m expected to compete as hard as I can every day
PBR: What summer team do you play on and how has travel baseball helped your development as a player?
Erny: Last year I played for the T3 Rays, however, I will not be playing summer ball this year due to a labrum tear in my shoulder. Travel ball has completely shaped my development as a player, you play the best of the best and create relationships with players from all over.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Erny: Coach Kevin May has been the biggest impact on me as a baseball player, he has coached me since I was in 8th grade (also a Marietta graduate) and has pushed me to become the player I am today, and I can’t thank him enough for everything he has done for me. My parents have also been the biggest impact on me throughout my life and baseball, I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for them.
PBR: What were your stats for this spring?
Erny: .310 AVG, .412 OBP, .352 SLG, 22 H, 17 RBI, 8 SB
PBR: Who is the best pitcher in Ohio that you have ever faced?
Erny: Chris Machamer
