Gus Gregory SS / 2B / Strongsville, OH / 2022

STRONGSVILLE - A resemblance to someone else helped attract Wright State to Gus Gregory.

“The head coach said I remind him of his brother,” Gregory related about Alex Sogard, the second-year mentor of the Horizon League program whose older sibling Eric was a second-round MLB pick of the Padres in 2007 and is currently a second baseman with the Brewers. “He said he likes how I swing it and definitely sees me playing for them.”

The admiration was taken to heart by Gregory.

“It’s a big deal that I remind him of his brother,” admitted the Strongsville sophomore, who has since committed to play for a program that has participated in the NCAA Tournament six times in the past 14 years. “It’s a compliment that they trust in me and a huge deal.”

Interest first began when the Wright State head coach was watching a pitcher on an opposing team back in the spring. The 25th-ranked 2022 in Ohio eventually went to a camp at the school on Dec. 8.

“I talked to the coach a day later and he said I needed to get bigger, faster and stronger,” the 5-9 155-pounder said. “But that same night my high school coach sent me a text and said to call them that night and I got an offer.”

The left-handed hitting middle infielder had also received interest from Ohio U, Xavier, Kent State and Ball State, but could not pass up what he saw in Wright State.

“I like the coaches,” Gregory noted. “They trust in me as a guy that can come in and play right away. They trust in me getting bigger, faster, stronger. My parents also want to see me play so they’ll be able to watch. They’ll only be three hours away.”

The decision to commit as a sophomore was not difficult according to Gregory.
