The Middle Infielders

Up the middle, Team Ohio will be anchored by Justin Childers (Pickerington North), Ty Suntken (Wauseon), and Derek Drewes (Defiance Tinora) as well as Chris Martin (Mason), one of the top arm’s in Ohio’s Class of 2014, and Alec McCurry (Olentangy Orange) who also catches. 

Childers, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound infielder from Pickerington Central in Columbus, has the versatility to play several infield positions. With a solid, projectable frame, Childers will likely find himself on the left side of the infield at the next level. The talented rising junior helped anchor the middle infield this past summer for the Columbus Cobras.

Suntken, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect out of northwest Ohio, will play the middle infield in addition to handling pitching duties for Team Ohio. Suntken shows above average arm strength (83 mph across the infield) and the athleticism to play several positions. The rising junior anchored a Wauseon team that was regularly featured in the top 10 Division II rankings for PBR this spring. He hit .507 with 4 doubles, 5 homeruns, and 30 RBI as a sophomore. He was named first team all league and honorable mention all district. Suntken is currently ranked first in his graduating class with a 4.00 GPA.

Drewes, a 6-foot, 180-pound prospect from northwest Ohio, will play the middle infield for Team Ohio. Drewes has been an integral part of Defiance Tinora’s state championship runs the past two seasons as a freshman and a sophomore. The left-handed hitting infielder hit .456 this spring with 12 doubles, 9 triples, a homerun and over 30 RBI. Tucked away into northwest Ohio, Drewes is looking to make a name for himself and follow in a long line of Division I prospects from the northwest part of the state. 

Martin, a 6-foot, 170-pound two-way prospect from Mason High School, will play the infield for Team Ohio. Martin, who is one of the top arms on Team Ohio’s roster, will likely pitch at the next level. The left-handed hitting infielder will stay on the left side of the infield when he isn’t flashing his skills on the mound.  The talented athlete, who also holds a 4.3 GPA, played for the Ohio Force this past summer.

McCurry, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect, will split his time at second base and behind the plate. Known for his offensive skills, the right-handed hitting McCurry will be counted on to provide an offensive spark for Team Ohio.  This past spring, he was an everyday starter at second base for Olentangy Orange, the Division I regional runner-up in Central Ohio.
