HAMLER - Playing a sport in college is something Kolton Holloway has long believed was going to happen. “I always that I could do it but I was never sure which sport exactly,” related the three-sport standout at Patrick Henry. “Since I was young I always wanted to play at the next level. In seventh grade it was just baseball, but the last couple years I’ve had a passion for football so that’s become more of an option, too.” Al all-state wide receiver getting a few college looks on the gridiron, Holloway has discovered his baseball potential is very strong. “Two PBR showcases were huge,” Holloway said in reference to the 2018 and 2019 ACME/Legion events at Defiance High School. “The year before I was kind of middle-of-the pack, but this year I went as a catcher and pitcher and saw that I stood out. It was then that I realized that this could be something.” Those in attendance felt the same way. “Coaches reaching out started the day of the showcase,” the 111th-rated senior in Ohio noted. “I got a text two hours after it ended and after that more of them started contacting me.” What they saw was an athletic 6-2 175-pounder with a rocket arm that touched 88 on the mound with a 1.90 pop time at catcher. “Lifting with football has helped me,” Holloway pointed out about his improvement. “I grew into my body and that’s helped my velocity. Playing three sports also helps.” A catcher for the most part in high school, the 40th-ranked 2020 right-handed pitcher in the state is getting more interest from colleges with his potential on the mound. “Most like me as a pitcher, although Dayton reached out about pitching and third base before PBR,” Holloway said. “I’ve pitched since I was young but with the needs behind the plate of the high school team I haven’t thrown the most innings. But I always knew with the arm I had above-average velocity. Control has not always been there, that’s where my lack of innings shows.” It is where Holloway sees improvement can be made. |
